Agreed, the handling and build quality are really not on the same page between the two.

I haven't rode the edge but if I didn't get my xft for a good deal id be all over the superfreak badass. They ride so amazing.

I have had my Superfreak since 2011. They aren't without their quirks when it comes to building them, but in my opinion they are a far better all around ski. I have ridden both and the rickter is a nice ski but it's not nearly as nimble. The freak will not hold an edge like the rickter, so determine if that's important to you.

The Superfreak is far more stable at any speed and at higher speeds the rickter can't compare. The freak is going to slide on the face of the wave. It will roll flatter and with less effort where he rickter kicks out into a flare. The rickter is shorter and will flip more easily, if we are comparing carbon to carbon.

From an overall comfort standpoint I feel the tray of the freak is also far superior. The edge is too narrow for my liking and adds to the instability.

If you plan to ride with any speed or for any period of time determine if you can handle the spray of the rickter, no front lip really drives me crazy.

I have ridden both of the Jason's Edges and they are very nice skis, but I haven't ridden anything that makes me want to give up my freak. You will grow accustomed to anything you buy so just weigh your priorities.

As others said Rickter is probably the cleanest and most acurate built hull on the market. It is also the strongest. As for the weight, why would you need light ski in the surf? Surf/freeride ski has to be heavy.
The edge requires a bigger engine. My rickter handles night and day just by switching from small power to DASA 950 with 148 pump. Tubbies on the edge would make it even better. Get rid of the rubber flap and put versiplug style scupper instead. As for the tray, i also used to be wide tray supporter, however if you are experienced freerider you dont need it. Wide tray is not your knees and ankles best friend when you flat land from 20ft+ high.
Last but not least, edge does not take water whatsoever in the engine compartment. This is another absolute must for a surf ski. Edge does not sink, it bobs like a SJ.
With the right power, Rickter edge is the the top freeride hull on the market, period (not because i have one)

I ride surf maybe 1 time a year. But I am not your average rider. I am probably the only active freestyler (Competitor) who does not care to back flip. I prefer old school tricks and rolls. Now, I may not be getting up on the hood for hood tricks any more. I do not like a hull that requires a short pole. The short pole helps your form and pulling when you are doing a back flip. And also to offset the shortness of the ski.

It all comes down to what Jason said pretty much you'll adapt to either one. Me personally I can't ride a freak it's so far beyond what I'm use to and prefer. It slides wayyyyy too loose, my legs are too far apart, and I just feel way more at home on a edge. But it's again all custom to what it's owner likes. Am hulls are exactly like a pair of shoes. I can't put on Jordan's when I'm use to vans. It just ain't my comfort lol.

most accurate comparison I've ever seen. if a rrp edge was full carbon and lighter it would be better fw trick ski. to buy a edge that almost never sees surf would be way counter productive. the only thing it does better than a sf in fw is rail tight high speed corners

Funny, I rode the edge in havasu, was immediately happy with it. It railed turns, it hopped out of the water with ease. I am not after a ski that will flat water flip. I have ridden several Freaks. I like them. But I have not liked them enough to swing me that direction. Yes, the Rickters are a wetter ride. But remember I come from a racing background. I like to rail turns. Riding around in a 25 yard radius is not my idea of fun.
