Super Jet Riding after Hip replacement

Just had a total hip replacement done in January and I'm wondering if anyone else on the site has gone back to riding after a procedure like this. I thought this was going to get me back to normal after the surgery but recovery has been much slower than I'd hoped for. Really bummed out about possibly not being able to ride this summer.

I would certainly consult your Ortho/surgeon. My mom had her hip replaced and I am pretty certain they told her that should always be at risk for a "dislocation". But maybe that was due to her age or it could have possibly been just for a lengthy period of time after the surgery.
Hope you can get back out there.

Super bummed to hear that you can't ride, mang. How old are ya? Did the doc give you an ETA on when you could spring back to normal?

I'm 39, It sucks having to get a hip replacement at this age. The doc said I could get back on the ski mid summer but I'd have to take it easy. I don't think he knows what I meant when I said I ride standups, he was probably thinking couches when I asked about the possibility of riding.

I hate the thought of not riding, and having to get rid of my skis.

Dislocation is always a possibility going forward, but the stronger you keep the muscles in your hip, the less likely it will dislocate I'm told.

This is true

Welcome to the club, just had mine done feb. 26 and mine is doing great, nice not dealing with that pain. I just sold my KDX because I was afraid if I had it I would ride it like it was meant to be ridden and thinking that's probbably not a good idea this summer.. That being said I think I will be able to backflip a ski this year just planning on limiting myself.
I feel pretty good and think i might ride this weekend in VA.

Like you said I don't think the Dr. even understands freestyle, I explained it to him and he said, no don't think u should be doing that ,yet he said downhill skiing is no problem, I have had some pretty good falls skiing and would be more afraid of dislocating my hip skiing then freestyle.. I think he is thinking the impact is to much as opposed to skiing but actually I think it's less..

What's going on with your recovery, where are you at, personally I feel I am doing better then I expected, I am quite happy with the results so far..

Wow never thought I'd find someone else on the site with a hip replacement as well. My recovery of the joint is going well, no more pain.

My issue is that I waited 20 years to have the procedure, and was previously living with an essentially locked up hip joint. So now I have to deal with retraining muscles that haven't been used in 20 years and untraining musles with 'bad habit' as my therapist calls them. So the majority of the therapy now is getting thru the mental blocks and muscle memory that my brain put on my left leg to compensate for my previously locked up hip. My old hip was so bad that the ball and socket were worn to the point that my left leg was 20 mm shorter than my right leg. When they put the new hip in it put tension on the muscles that didn't go away until the muscles grew longer, that was an enjoyable pain for a few weeks. So I'm not your typical hip replacement patient, but I would totally do it again. Just wish I did it 10 -15 years ago, but every surgeon I went to see didn't want to work on me due to my age. Even this time around I was told no by 2 surgeons before I found the Dr. that worked on me.

I guess I'll have to limit myself for now until I can figure out my new limits, I just hope I don't end up dislocating the hip trying to test my new limits.

Yoga and strength training is your best chance at getting on the ski quicker and not hurting yourself. By strength training I mean deadlifts and squats so you can build up your hip flexors and thighs. Can you do a squat with just your body weight? Maybe get a personal trainer or find a good physical therapist, don't push yourself to hard but don't be a wuss either. :)

Well it looks like I may be joining your little group, going to see an orthopedic DR as soon as I can get it all set up and most likely looking at hip replacement.

Good luck. I have a replacement on my right hip. Please ask your surgeon about a dual mobility acetabular cup. They are made for more active people and are close to impossible to dislocate.

Also, they feel very natural.

Is this a genetic predisposition or what? What did you guys do to your hips? I've had my share of back issues, even dislocated my pelvis......that one HURTS! But basically all because I'm tall and wasn't stretching regularly, tall people seem to have this issue. But as far as I know all my joints are intact at 47yo.

I am quite sure years of abuse lifting stuff that was way to heavy, racing motorcycles with very little suspension .riding standups, lifting engines out of skis by hand and just generally doing everything they tell me that I am supposed to be doing now messed up my hip. Mine is caused by osteoarthritis at least that's the clinical diagnosis.

I can understand that, and most likely was already in your genetics. Ehlers-danlos syndrome and degenerative disc disease run in my family. It's already aaffected my younger brother and one younger sister.....so far it seems maybe I've dodged it. But I still got my share anyway, small jaw and really crooked teeth, had to wear braces for 4 years. I'm also very near-sighted and been wearing glasses since the 2nd grade. Throw in my 9 months out of the year pollen allergies for good measure............I guess I'll still take that over bad joints.
