FX-1 Rocker and pump mod for my backup ski

I built my orange FX (bad fish) years ago as a backup for my Frankenstein FX. Well, after doing a rockered nose and a 148mm pump conversion on "Franky", the orange FX felt too dissimilar to be a good backup ski.

So, with Daytona only a few days away for me, I decided to tear into it! I started 2 weekends ago by rockering the nose, then last weekend I started the pump mod. This pump conversion is comprised of an interesting array of parts. The pump is a Polaris 6 vane stainless 148, with a Waveraider tilt nozzle and Kawi X2 sterring nozzle. I used a kawi prop in the polaris pump and it uses a Kawi STX driveshaft. This combo provides a 2-3/4" setback.

My goal with this conversion was to find a way to retrofit this 148mm pump into my ski (which had a 140 kawi 650 pump conversion) without doing any glass work. To pull this off, i made a pump shoe from blowsion sxr shoe and a 1/2" billet plate.

Here's a couple pics of rockered nose before turf:

Here's the pump mod:

Here's the pump shoe:

Here's the pump with wear ring and a 1/2" spacer i machined to allow for correct driveshaft position:

The pump mounts to the pump shoe via 4 long bolts, rather than bolting to the underside of the floor like yamaha and kawi 650 pumps.

When you squeeze a 148mm pump into an FX, there really no room to get any sort of wrench or socket on the steering cable nut. I'm sure this is pretty much the same for SJ pump conversions? To get around this, I made a wrench with 2 roll pins at each end and drilled the steering cable nut to interface with the roll pins. This wrench allows for loosening/tightening of the nut with ease in what little room there is.

Here's a pic of the wrench and modified nut:

Well, tomorrow the ski will get turf on the new nose rail and then thrown in the van for a Saturday departure for Daytona for test riding. I was getting worried I wouldn't pull of these mods in 2 weeks, but it looks like I'm gonna make it!

Wow JD ! Really nice it should work well, Your skills never dissapoint. I too am curious about this rocker on the front. I know you did the same to frankie. Are you just cutting the bond rail lifting it up towards the nose/fuel cap and then glassing it back at a new postion? ie changing the postion of the lip? or is there more to it like a front fill?

-The wear ring section, is that a factory polaris section or did you have to make that as well? This looks so awesome and makes my 140 swap look like childs play. did you have to shim or reposition inserts at the rear of the pump to bolt it all back up into the tray? killer tool i hope it all works out! -JW

The rocker mod I did to this ski (and my Frankenstein ski) is simply cutting the rail from approx where the hood starts and then raising it approx 1.5" at the very front. I don't modify the shape oft he hull at all. The stock shape of the FX lends itself to this very well without having to cut the bottom and re-shaping it. Although this may sound simple, it's not a piece of cake , as the top deck and bottom deck are not aligned. When you cut the rail off, you end up with an offset gap to deal with. I also eliminate the nose pin recess below the raised rail to flow the nose better.

To raise rail, i cutoff the vertical section on the portion to be raised. This leaves just the flat section. Then you make a cut where it attaches to both the top and bottom deck. Once it's disconnected from the hull, it flexes very easily and I lift the very front to where I want it (approx 1.5") and hold it there with a screw while I bond it back to the hull. The way it flexes gives a nice flowing curvature to the rail.

The polaris pump doesn't mount to the tray like a yam or kaw pump, it bolts to the pump shoe. I did make brackets that bolt to the stock kawi 650 pattern and the yamaha nozzle I'm using as an extra measure, but I'm going to run it without them first to see if they are necessary......they shouldn't be.

Damn. Hate you right now. I shoveled snow to pull my commuter car back out and put the truck away in the driveway today.

Enjoy the warm weather. Ski looks good.
