Rod ends are purple?

I just tore down a 62t/61x to send the cylinder out to get ported. The small ends of both rods were purple; I assume because of heat. Is this normal? If not, what does this mean??

Also, is there any reason to run more than one washer per side on the piston pin between the piston and the bearing/rod? I could have sworn I dropped one down into the case but I've accounted for four of them total and I can't seem to find anything down in the case. I'd really rather not split the cases to make sure as it held pressure perfect before the tear down.

:scratchchin:

I've seen the big ends turn themselves blue when the bearing goes out, but not the little ends. I've never seen more than one washer per side on a motor, but who knows what somebody may have thought was a good idea.
