i am guilty of it myself, but the normal big caribiner are bad. There is thread somewhere of someones handgina from the caribinaer ripped his hand open when trying to connect it in the surf.

I need to switch mine out, just haven't yet. Need something with no sharp edges.

I think this is the one you're talking about.

I believe he was trying to hook up to a guy that didn't have a tow loop on his ski. He also thought is was a fluke that his hand got caught on the carabiner. The caribiners are meant to make for a faster hook up, which they do, especially with a tow loop. If the rope is the right gauge, it's faster hooking up with a caribiner even without tow loops. If the rope is too thick, it's a pain.

for what??
For not having a rope.

Boating laws in NM:

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED TO OPERATE A VESSEL:

No person shall operate or give permission to operate a vessel on New Mexico waters which is not equipped as required by the New Mexico Boat Act and the State Park Boat Act Regulations.

For a PWC that includes the life jacket which must be worn, one oar or paddle (many use the collapsible or bungee one to the inside of the engine compartment), the bailing bucket of at least one gallon (the removable one provided by the manufacturer is usually one gallon or more in size), length of stout rope equal to the vessel length, B-1 fire extinguisher, 1/2 mile sounding whistle or horn, flame arrestor on the carburetor in place, ventilation that is not blocked, and engine cut-off switch lanyard in place. No throw cushion is required since every person on board must wear a life jacket.

Who has a bucket in their ski???

I just thought of something.

Imagine someone on a sinking standup trying to bail it out with a 1 gallon bucket.:laugh2::bad3:

that's hilarious...

even a sitdown wouldn't have enough room in the engine bay to get a 1 gallon bucket in there. i swear, just when i think politians can get any more retarded... bam, more stupidy in action...

i dont see why you just cant go into the beach and tie it up there??...no need for a loop or caribiner??

I think it depends on the situation. Remember, we don't get anywhere near the surf you west coast boys do. If someone's ski stops running and they're not near the beach, our waves tend to take you a long ways down the beach before you get to shore. We also rarely have the risky situation you do with big waves. If we get 4-5 foot faces we're ecstatic.

We are also much more likely to need to tow someone in off the lake, so it's rare that wave size is a factor. Occasionally, we'll have enough slop and chop that it get's difficult and/or slightly risky to hook up. When we were out at one of our local lakes the other day, we had solid 3-4 foot faces of wind blown, slightly choppy waves where it funnels in at a bridge crossing. This would have been a pain and mildly risky to hook up and I nearly needed it for my boat, but was able to limp back to shore.

I just bought new rope and caribiners (they're here, haven't even opened the box, yet) to make new ropes that we can wear wrapped around us like WaveDemon does. Hubby's not sold on the idea, but I think I can make 'em work. We don't have tow loops in the backs of our skis and I think we will put small ones on made from rope. Just big enough to hook out own caribiners through. That way, we can drop in, hook up our rope to the back of our own ski, then ride up and hand over the free end for the towee to hook to their own front tow loop.

Here's a scenario for the rope in a fire extinguisher:

You're out in the middle of a lake when the engine dies on you and you can't get it started. U grab the fire extinguisher (from wherever) and it slips through your fingers and falls in the water.

Don't fire extinguishers float like rocks?

Floats like a balloon because there is nothing in there other than air and a rope. :silly:
