what do you mean to light in the surf, what does it do you dont like? unless you mean break I dont follow?

The light ski is fun for going big on backflips, but to carve the wave & just ride the surf its to light. Mine floats much higher in the water (My rail when its just sitting in the water is 1.5 to 2in above the water) Also the light hull rides nose high & when you start pushing hard in the waves you unhook the pump. You can do it, but for all around having fun I enjoy my oem hull with #.0 tubbies.

Also these light weight hulls are for flat water, the surf is hard on them. When I bought my hull from Tem we made a deal that I would see if I could get a failure surf riding.

Don't get me wrong I love the light ski, I'm going to drop a few more pounds with my new pole. Light weight = loads of fun!

My Avatar PIC is on my Carbon Ski

Also, for where I ride 95% of the time, any waves we get are wind driven, so to be out on a head high wave day means you are battling against 25mph + winds. A light ski will just get blown all over the place once you are airborne.

About a ski being "too light": I saw Norbert (of Lightweight.de) explain this on a German board. He said that the SJ was designed by Yamaha to handle a certain way. That design had to assume a weight. The SJ handles the way it does because of the way it's shaped and how much it weighs, how it sits in the water.
If you make a SJ hull that weighs significantly less than the original design weight, you completely change the handling characteristics. That may not be a good thing.

(Just relaying what he said)

Good points, but they were not designed to flatwater backies and huge flatwater rolls off of setups either.............:nana:

Honestly, I dont like lightweight hulls. Given enough time I could get use to it.

Once you own one & put some time on it you would like it. It takes a few tanks to get use to it. Its almost like learning to ride all over. But after you get use to the light hull, go back to the oem and you feel rock solid. Riding a light hull has improved my riding so much faster.

Who cares if you use the power and/or light weight to its potential.
Some people just want power for power's sake.
Nothing wrong with that - you don't have to be a Sensei of Jetski technique to "deserve" big power.

x2! Hell if i could afford it id have the lightest hull and a xscream 1000 beast. And i know i couldnt use it to its potential but it would be hella fun!

Once you ride with big power "Xscream" there's no going back. Best of both worlds is light hull with Xscream power! My Surf SJ has a 701 & I can't stand to ride it after having my 860 Xscream, gotta a 827 in the oven now!
