Running two strokes in in cold water

For the cold weather riders, what all do you do to your skis to ride in water that's in the 30* - 50* range?
What's the best way to restrict the cooling water to get and keep the engine up to temp, less inlet water or just restrict the outlets?
I have always restricted the outlets to hold the water in the engine longer, but maybe that's wrong?

I ride year round here in Wisconsin. You're over thinking it. Just warm it up like you would normally and enjoy the free horsepower.

I've never done anything to restrict water to the engine. Ran outboard 2 strokes all winter without issues. They do have thermostats unlike our skis.

In Canada here when it's near freezing my Dasa motor wasn't even warming up the pisser water. I ended up teeing 2 of the 4 pisser together and then I have a tiny ball valve on that line that I can throttle down or close completely if needed.

When I lived in Nebraska I would do the same thing you mention. I would put home made brass with 3mm hole restrictors and clamp them in the pisser line right before its exits the ski. Also, yes, pre-warm the ski up real good, cold seizures are a real thing..lol

How many pissers and pump pickups were/are you running?

Water doesn't conduct heat very well, so it would be hard to tell with cold water and that many pissers flowing. Did you check the engine temps or just the water temps?

Thanks for the feedback. We run water up the pole and onto the grips, that is a restriction in itself and then we restrict the other pisser. We check temps with a heat gun on cylinders, head, pipe, water box and adjust if necessary. I was just wondering if anyone did something different.

4 pissers in total, 2 I can block off with the valve. I just check the temp with my hand while riding, don't go fast until it's warm.

On a hot summer day running the 701 at WOT in a jetmate the cylinders are only around 110-120ish degrees. But after stopping they shoot up to 140-150. So figure when running the temps are much lower vs after you take off the hood to check.

Make sure to set the carbs richer as the air temps dip. Higher combustion temps cause more problems than a little cooler water.

You’re riding right now?
