650/X-2 Salt Water into engine when not running

Hey guys, I took a bad spill while riding in the ocean a few months back. I have a lanyard kill switch on my ski and so when I fell off the ski the engine cut off like it was supposed to. I couldn’t make it back to my ski in time and both me and my ski got tossed around for a couple of minutes until someone pulled me out on their ski. When I got to my ski it was floating upside down. I screwed up and didn’t get the water out quick enough because my battery was dead. The engine is getting a full rebuild currently because it took on a ton of water and like a dumbass I let it sit too long. I’m just wondering, if the engine wasn’t running how so much water could’ve gotten in there, and also if I have a crash like this in the future how I can prevent it from taking on so much water and ruining the engine? Thanks

Water can enter from the intake and exhaust even when the engine is not running. Always remove all moisture asap when on dry land by pulling plugs, flipping the ski, and cranking motor in short cycles. Followed by flushing the motor with lube and hopefully getting it running again that same day. It’s a pia, but will safe you $$$. Only Brightside to your scenarios, I have seen people put them away wet, and the cylinder/piston literally becomes fused to the whole bottom end with rust. The disassembly becomes quite challenging. Parts can end in the trash.

Make sure you have a good hood seal and make any adjustments needed to get the hood extra tight on that seal. You can also run frogskinz over your hood vents. Run the OEM air box, use a bilge pump, run a bigger battery and float change it the night before you ride. Carry extra spark plugs. Once your spark plugs eat enough salt they wont work. Fresh plugs will help it fire up quicker. *Keep a lithium jump starter pack in your truck in case your battery does die.

Last but not least dont let go of your ski or let it get upside down.
