sandblasting cases

i just got a free 62t bottom end. the stator, bendix, flywheel, and starter are all in good shape, but the crank, the inside of the cases, intake manifold, and carbs are rusted all to hell. i just got done taking it all apart, will it be ok to get the cases and intake manifold sandblasted? this may be a stupid ? but i didnt know if sandblasting could damage anything. also, there is a small indention on the flat surface where the cases meet the cylinders, right where the rod comes out of the cases, if i were to smooth it down will it be a problem?

Yea you can sandblast them. I cant see very well in the pics what your talking about. Aslong as the mating surface with the bottom of the cylinder is still flat you should be ok.

yikes, looking kinda ruff... you could beat it with a hammer and and they might look better... but seriously i cant read the type 2 font in red, whats it say?
 
Just make it flat and you should be ok. They dont look that bad. Some peoples port jobs would remove half of that anyways. If not ill give you $25 bux for the top adn bottom halves.:biggthumpup:

dude cases go for cheap on here it wouldnt be worht my time to sandblast that thing back to decent shape and risk posibility of an air leak or some other issue. Sometimes the long way's the short way just my 2cents

I blast all my aluminum engine parts with silicone carbide and powder coat them for corrosion protection. You have to be real careful to remove all the blast media by using a small tip blow gun with compressed air, pressure washing, chasing all the threads, etc or you may damage internal engine parts from left over debris.

T cases do not go for cheap, unfortunately.

His pics look nasty, but a little bit of sandblasting and careful cleaning of the gasket surfaces will result in a set of T cases that would go for $200+ bucks on here.

Nothing wrong with that. :biggthumpup:

I really don't see a potential for air leaks here if things are done right.

T Cases

Make sure you can get your case bolts to torque specs before wasting your time/money on blasting.I've never been comfortable w/heli-coils or other options when it comes to cases.

actually, the bolts are the least of my worries. increadibly they all had antiseize on them and not a single one was rusted in or gave me any problem when taking them out.

I had the same scenario with a set I was reconditioning a few years back,everything came apart easily and I continued on with custom paint only to find on re-assy that the threaded case half wouldn't hold torque specs,just a thought before putting time/money into a project.

They will look nearly new after blasting and work perfect as long as you don't have any major pitting on gasket surfaces. Minor pitting is easily filled with 3 bond.

Also, be careful about taking too much material off around the bearing mating surfaces. You want them to apply even pressure all the way around the bearing.

Clean very well with warm soapy water. As #.0 mentioned, a pressure washer is great, an ultrasonic cleaner is best.

If you like the aluminum look, final blast with glass beads to polish, and clearcoat to protect.

im going to be taking this to a machine shop to do. so should i tell them to lightly blast the inside of the cases, just enough to remove the rust? also i believe the cas was missing bolts if there is suppose to be 8. there were only 4 when i took them off ( guess he needed parts) are the large bolts all the same length, if so ill just go get some replacements. as for the bedplate, will the one off of my 6m6 work with no issues?

Edit: not thinking right, ill just use the bolts off of my 6m6 when i take the crank out
