Next time your really excited or happy just tell everyone how gay(happy) your feeling, or if your about to go smoke let everyone know your gonna go smoke a fag(cigarette). Like Matt said, things change over time. Doubt your gonna tell the checker how gay you are cause your in a good mood, or how bad you wanna smoke a fag.

This is a subject that I have argued with my sarcastic (Swapmeet) friends for a long time. Their ignorance on the matter has caused me several headaches and I have just gotten to the point where I just ignore it. Here is a thought for those who say there is no difference between saying engine or motor, try ordering a new engine for your washing machine.

Look up common dictionary definitions of both words. It's perfectly acceptable to use motor instead of engine (in today's English), but not the other way around - for good reason (see links already posted).
Every engine is also a motor. Not the other way around.

I am aware of this, I am a diesel generator technician with a degree in diesel technology. I had a professor fail 3 students because they called a diesel engine a motor on their final exams. I'm sure to people who aren't as involved with having to deal with both electric motors and engines on a daily basis, it's not a big deal, but for people like me, it can mean the difference between the correct parts to repair something.

i highly doubt it will make a difference for you. im sure you have to be more careful about vocabulary. but when i order parts, im usually pretty specific about what i want. i dont just say i need this for my motor/engine. if i do, they wont just guess, theyll start asking questions. like what motor/engine are you talking about, what year, make, model. its probably why they have part numbers and catalogs to go look up the numbers.

Language changes over time.

I was about to say this until I saw your post... Definitions and context change as well. I listened to a friend tell someone that waverunner's were sitdowns and jetski's were stand ups. I didn't feel like argueing and let it be.

We could always reference the "N-word"...originally derogatory and now it's another word for friend among a specific demographic. English is awesome like that...lol

On another forum, I know this kid who kept saying he had a car for sail or that he was saleing something. No lie, Kotajoe can attest. I posted this for that member.

The word PERUSE used to mean to "examine with great detail".

Enough people used it incorrectly for long enough that it now is interchangeable with browse.
