SC no longer has 93 ethanol free

Been catching hell trying to find ethanol free 93 this summer here in South Carolina. Did some research apparently all you can get here is 90 octane ethanol free now. Really blows since every ski I own runs on 91 plus. I hate running ethanol in anything other than my car, and I really dont want to have to pay $ to mix race. This sucks, hope other states dont follow suit.

You know you can remove ethanol from fuel? You add a quantity of water, shake, then let phase separation do its thing. You'll have start with the highest octane rated fuel as the loss of ethanol will drop its rating. You'll probably want to add an octane booster as insurance.

Seriously, search the 'net - there's heaps of articles on the process.

By the way, we get 98 octane ethanol-free here in Australia. Only problem is it's around $1.50 AUD per litre/liter:(

Our 98 here in Aus is the equivalent of 93 in the states or the rest of the world. It's also some of the lowest quality fuel available. Best mix it with toulelene or even better just get avgas because it's regulated better and you know exactly what you're getting and it's the same every time

Thats just to much work plus still adding booster. Id run diesel mixed with weed eater oil before i do all that. ;/

Hahahaha. You think everything that's flying around in the ski is FAA approved? There are more experimental aircraft out there than certified, easily.

No l didn't know that,l just fell off the boat yesterday. :rolleyes:o_O Maybe we can get someone that really knows to chime in

I have had my foot in aviation for a while now. Some people are going to tell you that avgas is made for engines that turn like 2500 rpm max, some will say the octane rating is not even close to what we see at the pump, some will say it's meant for high altitude, etc. You will have it hit from all different sides.

2400 might be what you turn in a Cessna, but what about the guys doing aerobatics? 3200 or more rpms? What about the radial motors? What about the rotax 4 stroke engines?

Is it vp 110? Simple answer no. But you can mix it to cut cost of higher octane fuel. I would never run straight avgas in a ski, car, boat, etc. But cut it with a little 93 or if you need the octane higher cut it with 110. Still achieves the same result and goal we are after, no detonation.

But hey, what do I know.... I'm just a kid who is still learning.

Local station told me they bumped the octane rating for ethanol free down to 90 because it doesn't always make 93. They are just sandbagging and it is the same old fuel

I think it boils down to 93 w/10% is not that great but unless you really want to pay for big boy fuel it's the best abundantly available option. Many including myself have been running the 93 w/10% for years and sure it may require carbs seals to be replaced every 1 to 2 years but that's still alot cheaper than buying 93 when it was pure. Besides it doesn't hurt to open the carbs up for inspection every winter just to look them over. Fuel is hard on plastic seals regardless if it is pure or not.

Would it be worth it to pull your fuel line off an oem filter and push on a spare fuel line and run the motor a bit in pre mixed non ethanol fuel so the carbs sit all week in real fuel ? Carb flushing...
