School me on ride plates.

Mainly do flatwater freestyle and some surf (75/25 flat to surf). Been at it a long time (no newb) but haven't been riding as much or trolling the forums for a long time.
Plate is have was state of the art when I got it 8-10 years ago (Wamilton's carbon fiber freestyle plate) but I'm starting to think it is too long as I really need to nut-up and start doing backflips.
SuperJet hull, big bore Lamey motor.

What purpose do the D-cuts serve?
What is the best current plate for flatwater and for backflips/barrel rolls? I figure I need one shorter as mine is a good bit longer than the hull (about 2")

The plate you got us still a very good plate. Cut it flush with the hull to start if you want to go shorter, than you can dcut if you need more. Or buy a stocker and do the same if you din't want to hack up your plate.

this year im going to run a stock 08+ SJ plate. it fits flush with my 00 hull (Tmart's old hull) and they are super light weight. i have also heard of a few other guys running the same plate on freestyle built skis.

It's a Squarenose plate and no lighter than any other year SJ stock plate

Answering the question in your thread title, a ride plate does two things, first it protect your pump but mainly it determines at what attitude your hull will move through the water, either nose low or nose high. A longer plate will make your ski ride nose low, allowing it to plain quicker, so it is the choice for racers or carvers. A short plate will make your ski ride nose high, making it more or less "Plow" through the water. Short plates are the ticket for freestylers and surf riders who want the nose up for more "pop" or simply to not dig in when coming off the steep section of a wave. The "D" cut plate is really a poor man's way to shorten a ski as it takes out even a little more of the plaining surface from a straight cut plate

Spoken like a true linguistic ninja. My hats off to you Mr. Howe:beerchug:

Thanks guys. I guess I was hoping it was my ride plate keeping me from backfliping rather than my lack of balls :-o I just have to nut-up and hit some waves :)
Haven't been into skiing as much over the last couple years as I got heavy into dirtbiking, but I plan to do a lot of skiing this sping/summer/future :-D So you'll see me around here more regularly.

Sooooo, the "D-cut" isn't that big a deal?

The "D" cut makes a noticable difference. I can slide my ski around far better than another comparably outfit ski, but he can plane out faster. Its a trade off. As far as it being the "answer" to your inability to flip, I would highly doubt it, but it will help your trim get you in the flipping motion a bit easier. Bur most often the inability to flip is either lack of balls or form.

In surf I think the inability too flip is simply lack of commitment... The wave basically does all the work.all you really have to do is hold on and time it right. Zack bright told me one day " duuude! Just hit the wave way later then you feel comfortable with" went back out and landed the first one I hucked.inability to flatwater flip is usually lack of $$$. Lol
