After waiting for six months, my Matrix was finally done. I picked it up the day before Thanksgiving from Bobby's (his smiling face below) in Malabar. The ski s now complete, but I'll drag you through the build before I show the finished product.

ScottS's Matrix ES

Bobby seals his lower hull without foam. We surf ride only and my biggest fear is to sink the ski and loose it ($$$) in the ocean. So, I rode down before the upper deck was put on and filled the rear section with closed cell foam. I like using strips of foam insulation becase it allows any water that may get into the rear of the hull to drain down where it could be drained out of the rear drain plug. Probably wasn't necessary, but I sleep better.

It didn't seem to add weight, the bare hull weighs 102 lbs. and the hood 12 lbs. This is an all fiberglass model. I'm not worried about having a super light ski, at 55 I probably won't be putting it far into orbit.

It is solid and well built. I looked at a lot of hulls, I bought this one because of the quality of the glass work, not so much the style. I was tired of repairing cracks in my SJ, I feel this one will be bullet proof.

I have, and would have done the same thing. I really don't understand why those who go foamless don't do this. It adds less than a pound of weight and that is well worth it for the peace of mind it offers.

I can't wait to see the rest. The ski looks awesome.

Looking great Scott, keep the pics coming. I never did see what you did at the rear to clear all the throw from that X-Scream trim.

Your Hull is 2lbs lighter than mine and so is your hood so Bobby's new layup is shedding some weight as promised. 4lbs lighter overall.

I know your build is done now but as a tip to others I would have to say don't clearance the rear tray for the trim until you actually have it completely installed. I cut WAY into the tray to clearance my Thrust trim based on how far it would go when I put it on. Then when I actually connected it all up it wouldn't really throw that far and I could have avoided cutting the tray at all on my first BOB hull.

I'll get to the trim pictures soon. Did I mention this is a -2" hull?

The nose is wider than the SJ. The overall width at the sponson area is 2" wider than stock, but 2" less than my SJ with Tubby 1's

The glasswork inside of the hull is a work of art, I told Bobby that he shouldn't hide it with paint, he doesn't want to give away his lay-up secrets

Now the pump. I added a new couch modified drive shaft from Chris (Jetmaniac) to replace my almost stripped stocker. I had to grind the crap out of the top of the 96 Raider nozzle to clear the new X-Scream trim ring. I did a little clean up in the pump, added a TBM super cone with a 13/19 C-75 big hub Skat prop

I drilled and tapped for dual cooling. I ended up removing the alignment pins in the stator and rotating it 180 degrees to give clearence for the steering cable when the trim was pulled. I had to grind the steering nozzle to clear the trim ring arm and to allow for max up/down, left/right movement

Looks good Scott! You will be easy to find on that bright red baby.

You are probably the slowest ski builder next to me!

Back from a Christmas trip, where did I leave off.

Pump is in, the trim cable was 1/2" too short. Got a 4 mm coupling nut, drilled and tapped it to 5 mm, cut the threaded end off a long 5 mm bolt, then screwed it on the end of the cable to extend it. This X-Scream trim has lots of travel, I had to cut a little area out of the rear bond rail for clearance.

Now to the foot holds. The Martix tray is over an inch wider that a stock SJ, buy not as wide as I like. Also, because I have a fused subtaylon joint in my left foot, I can't turn it out. So, I make my own foot holds that keep my feet facing more forward than out. I also like the tray wider where I put mt left foot forward. So I started cutting and cutting, Bobby would be sick!

After butchering the glass, I started shaping the foam. I had to add some two part foam here and there, shape with a rasp and sand paper, then fill the little areas with spackling, the only thing I had that would dry fast and sand easy. I roughened all the glass around the cut outs with a 24 grit disc for a good toothing for the new glass.
