scratch prevention

Has anyone ever tried using the 3m clear vinyl on the bottom of a ski to prevent scratches? Just looking for the best way to prevent scratches on the bottom of the ski.

If the edge seam gets water under it the whole wrap will rip off from water pressure/friction while riding. Maybe if it was wrapped up the nose above the bond line all the way to the back?

Thats what i was thinking. I dont think i could get it wide enough to do a single piece, but it would run the length of the hull.

Tried it, came off after about 10 rides. I just did one piece down the center for beaching. Since that analness I learned its better to ride skis then look at them.

It would take a lot of work to get it to contour correctly in one piece stretching heating or whatever they do to apply the material. I wanted to get a hood of mine wrapped by a professional but gave up the idea seeing how I ride my ski way too much for it to last.

Even if you do get it on there all perfect the first scratch you pierce though on the bottom its gonna rip off from there. Then you gotta sterilize it all again and apply a new sheet each time that happens.

Take pictures of your ski right after you build it and cherish them. Then give your ski the beating it deserves and don't regret it. People with ultra clean skis don't ride enough!! (yes there are many exceptions for that ie sponsored riders with new changing equipment, flat water pros, etc etc....) The avg joe rickter like myself don't give a sh it after a while

I've applied that to the nose on my Rocket twice now, since I've had it. Only twice because it's such a pain to contour it and make it look good. And I wrap it around to the bottom part of the nose. The water does eventually and slowly peel it back, but that is above the splash guard, so that probably reduces some of the water's force on it...

@jo5hi3 another thing I was thinking about would be a polymer or ceramic paint sealant that is used in the detailing world. Not sure it if would be compatible with gel coat, but something like Opti Coat or Cquartz might be worth trying.

I use this on all of my snow skis which I beat the crap out of and it holds up good but I'm not sure if I get the same stuff you are talking about because I get it from a executive at 3M and he said it was used on the bottom of the USA winning sailboat so I'd assume it'd work great on ski

I imagine it might be a bit of a price tag involved but you could always clear coat it in 2 part epoxy resin. I am using East System 2 part epoxy on my reinforcement work and the final cure is as clear as spring water. So far I have done my engine compartment walls full length and height on the first resin/hardener cans. A good and affordable alternative which is the same thing I am going to be applying after I get my ski painted is POR 15 products clear coat. The stuff I have is old stock 2 part clear coat but they claim it will take a bunch of abuse. So for 30 bucks I figured it was worth a try. The new stuff is a little more expensive at 42 but still affordable.

I think the only foolproof way of protecting the bottom is a keel guard (keelshield). Saw some ski's years ago with an aluminum keel guard. Even then you will scratch up the bottom from bunks and stands.

Make it look good over the winter, then ride the poop out of it over the summer. Repeat. You never see a Lemans car without scratches in victory lane..... Top deck, and side of bottom deck is all I try to keep looking purdy.
