300/440/550 Scratching head?!?

So I'm trying like hell to get this 550 together to sell...get everything put back in and hooked up and it won't start. The engine is bone stock...never touched. I have spark (checked against head with both plugs) and am getting fuel (not hooked to gas tank...just pouring in plug holes and shooting starter fluid in carb a little at a time). Compression is good. I can't figure out what else it could be? Why the hell won't the spark ignite the fuel. It's not flooded...cranked with plugs off to make sure...no mist. Plugs are wet. What else am I missing? Please help.

How about a better attitude little buddy.

You could use more gas and a match....that should keep it burning for at least an hour!!

I though for sure the voodoo would work,oh well must not have had enough 550 parts on the bonfire,we will try again later with more parts!

No attitude here. I need the money and this ski is kicking my ass. I did however enjoy the ever constant superjet vs. kawi comments you guys so pleasantly shared. I would debate it but I'd rather go ride. Hey, you guys want to go....oh yeah...insensitive I know.

I got a Yamaha that's running! (Bought a Blaster)

Hey Cam, if you need help, we can get together at my place and look at it together.

($25/hr)

No popping...it won't even fire. Crank spins and plugs spark out of hole. I've poured gas in the plug holes a little at a time and sprayed starting fluid in too. Is it possible to lose spark when under compression?

sense you said the plugs are wet it is more than likely flooded, crank it over a few times and let it sit then put new plugs in her and give her some starting fluid and the throttle open a tad and it should fire if you have spark, compression, fuel, and air(make sure the butterfly in the carb isn't closed all the way off)

I don't think it was flooded...I was pouring gas down the carb and they were still dry after cranking so I started pouring straight down the plug hole. And I had thought I flooded it so I turned it over without the plugs in and hardly anything sprayed out. I was wondering about the coil...I have a spare ebox I can rob from to see if that's it. I was thinking today and wondering if timing had anything to do with it? Could being out of time make it not fire at the right time preventing it from starting? I'm no wizz by any means but that logically made sense to me. I don't even know where to start to check for that. Anyways, I'll try swiching coils to see what happens....hopefully my spare isn't bad. Thanks for the replies...keep em' coming if you guys can think of anything else.

Pull the flywheel cover, pull the flywheel, inspect the woodruff key, flywheel and stator.

well from my experience with the 400, 440, and 550 motors you can take the stator and advance it tell the plate wont allow you to no more and it will still start and run but it will pre detonate and fry a piston, and you can also take and retard the stator plate tell it wont let you anymore and it will still run, it will run really really crappy, so enless you sheared a woodruff key the stator position wont matter
