Seadoo SPX & Seadoo 3D

Hi there!

I have a stock 1997 Seadoo SPX.
I´m looking for an impeller to this ski, what do you recomend? (no top speed improvement needed).
Do i also need to change the all impeller housing or just the wear ring?
Do you advice any other mods to this ski?

I'm thinking in buying a Seadoo 3D, but i have some douts.
Which model is best, the 3D RFI or the 3D DI model?
Does any of this models tend to have problems (electrical or mechanical)?
My actual SPX is very very fuel economical, how do these 3Ds are in fuel economy?

Many thanks!

Call Impros about your impeller they can get you in the right direction and as far as the questions on the 3D you may want to ask this on www.pwctoday.com for more answers, there are probably more people over there that could properly answer questions about SeaDoos.

Where do you live? I have an RFI 3D I bought for my GF in 06 thats run great. She never rides it....I'd sell it cheap. Either way it gets incredible fuel ecomomy. All day on an 8gal tank.

Solas X impeller works real well in the X-4 hulls like your Seadoo 97 SPX.

You already have a sit down, you should forget about the 3-D and get a Yamaha Superjet or a Kawasaki SX-R.

I think he has a fx1 already. There is a post in the fx section he made aswell.

Also, it's spelled doubt not dout FYI

I'm from Portugal (Europe), sorry about the english errors..
The Seadoo 3D is for my girlfriend. She just loves her SPX but she is really into the 3D (but didn't ride one yet).
She likes frat water recreational but also some wave jumping.
Yes, i have a Yamaha FX1 jetski already and i'm considering in buying a Superjet or mod the FX1.
About the 3D, we want to have it but we have to decide if we sell first the SPX or we first buy the 3D and then we wait to see if it doesn't have problems and if it's really fun...
We do not have any idea about the mantainance of the 3D. As far as the SPX, we have it for many years and we hadn't one single problem! And that make us afraid the sell it and then buy a thing that won't work as reliable as this one...

Besides the steering bushing recall, I have not done a single thing to the 3d. The RFI is the 787 motor and its super reilable. Starts first crank everytime and always goes. Just winterize it if its going to sit. Its not a very fun ski (has negetive bottom end power) but it does do long trips great and goes pretty fast. I made an X2 style seat for 2 ppl, and my GF and I both go out on it for trips that my X2's and SJ would run out of gas. I use it like a couch (which kind of is) and I have even gone out fishing on it a few times. But I paid 3k for it brand new, with a brand new loadrite trailer.. from a seadoo dealer on ebay. Dont pay anymore then that for it, its not worth it. I want to sell it just to get a 3 seater couch to wake board off of.

The RFI is kind of slow in that hull ,the DI has more beans but is a nightmare when something goes haywire, one bad sensor, unplugged connector or pushed out pin in a multiconnector and you are dead in the water.if only it had used the carbed engine it could have at least been made into a fun ski.

What is the weight diference between the 3D (both RFI and DI) and the 1997 SPX?
Does the DI model tend to be dead in the water frequently? Do does electonic problems happend often?

Solas XO work good, but they're better in a modded ski. Even stock should give 1~2mph on top with about the same holeshot and mid.

Or the other popular one is the Skat Swirl 17/22. Wakes up holeshot and mid while keeping the top about the same as stock.

Weight of the x4 hulls is @ 450, maybe even a little less.

Those are dry weights....no oil, no gas. Wet weight on the 3D DI is about 700lbs, but the RFI has to be a bit lighter.

Correct, just the published weights. With gas and oil I am sure they are both OVER 700 once you dip em in the water and they are wet...lol

Didn't knew that the 3D was so heavy! I thought that it was lighter than the SPX!...
About the impeller, i prefer hookup power and mid power. Is that Skat Swirl 17/22 the best choice? It's better to change the wear ring or the impeller (pump) housing as well?
Does the stock SPX need any critical mod, such as intake grate or ride plate?

Thanks!

The 3D is essentially an XPL/XP DI with a different top deck.
Not super-heavy by today's standards, but still pretty hefty. That thing is over 9ft long.

I've got the skat 17/22 in my wife's otherwise stock 98 spx and that thing goes like a raped ape for a stock ski. Pretty sluggish until it gets up on plain but the power is impressive once it gets going.

My personal opinion with these 787 rave valve engines is to leave them stock. 110hp from 787 cc is pretty damn impressive and, imo, you are rolling the dice by making any changes. For example, I've got a bud with a 96xp (pretty much the same boat) that has aftermarket flame arrestors (re-jetted), intake grate, solas prop, and some other hi-po parts I can't remember. Easily $500+ worth of mods and mine is every bit as fast as his, if not faster. It's funny how much it pisses him off, lol.

787 I'd leave stock, maybe put some Proks F/A's and rejet. All else would just be bolt-on & handling mods.

The stock intake grates suck, find a Worx (don't know the model but search on a couch site and you'll find which one). No need to change pumps, just replace wear ring if needed.

Dustin,
You sure her boat is dialed in or isn't cavitating? Almost every boat I've seen with the Skat has that quick jump off the line that you have to get up on the bars to keep the nose down.

Also your buddy's boat doesn't seemed tuned either if you can take him or he just has F/A's and prop. If he doesn't already tell him to get the R&D nozzles think they're 85/88's. (ps you can ditch the intake grates to get more speed if you ride flats).
