Securing 2x4 to trailer frame

I’ll be buying and reconfiguring a used 2 place trailer soon to hold 2 sit downs and a b1 sideways in the front. I’m thinking of using 2x4’s vertical directly on the trailer frame, but not sure if there’s a good way to secure those. Would 4x4’s be better/easier to secure with U bolts? It seems like it should be easy but I’m not sure how people typically do this setup.

Lastly, after I get the bunks figured out, what is the best way to secure the ski? I know a welder that should be able to fab a bow stop if needed, but maybe straps underneath like the hitch haulers would be easier. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

If you just cut off some 1" sections of 1 1/2" angle steel......you can weld them directly to the frame where the bunks will be. Drill holes in the new brackets, run lag bolts up into the 2x4 from the bottom. Piece of cake!

Maybe look at something like this bracket , they are pontoon boat trailer brackets but more than likely you could turn the bracket perpendicular to the existing bunks and secure them with u-bolts at an angle across the trailer tubing if you get what I am saying. You use the brackets in the second link to secure the 2 x4's to them.

Or you could use brackets like the pic below and bolt them to the bunks at an angle to get them parallel

You can probably get away with simple Corner Braces at your local home improvement store. Grade 5 or higher bolts.

I have a 2" square tube trailer frame, drilled a 1/2" vertical hole and a 7/16"+/- hole about 3" deep in the 2x4. Got a 5" x 1/2" lag bolt, put on a washer and ran them up in there. So far a full season of use, no play.
