Serious question for the old guys here

So, lately I feel like I may be heading toward early onset Alzheimers. My Dad died from it a few years back. My own story is that I can't focus for shidt and my short term memory is now non-existent. The number of times a day I walk into another room and can't remember why can be counted in the dozens, not on one hand. This morning I made two cups of coffee from the Keurig in the same cup, back to back about a minute apart (I think). So that was messy. I also woke up with blood on my chest. No idea where it came from. No nose bleed, no cuts or scratches on my chest, just dried blood. I had one beer last evening, alone, so it's not like I got black out drunk or got rufied. (spelling?) This concerns me deeply. Do any of you in my age range (I'm 56) experience anything like this? Are any of you taking supplements or meds to combat this or regain better mental clarity or focus? Any input is appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Two things that I have observed (repeatable experiment) negatively affect my immediate ability to remember things (from what I was just doing to the names of close people):
1) caffeine
2) sleep deprivation

(1) means I quit caffeine entirely about 3 years ago. I miss coffee, but after repeatedly testing it, there was no question it screwed up my memory.

(2) is still a problem.

So, not exactly what you asked, but the keurig comment made me think it might be useful.

It’s always best to see your doctor for some tests.

Could be a lot of things but there is often pseudo dementia at your age. But given family history it’s worth looking into- scans could show brain atrophy but no use worrying until proven.

Stress, inflammation, sleep deprivation can all cause what you’re describing. And since I imagine you think about it often, it probably makes it worse, it can be a vicious cycle.

An anti inflammatory diet is always good, fish oil is also known to help with memory.

Edit- also keep your mind active and constantly working. Challenge it and learn new things. Even puzzles.

I just hope you remembered to order your new ski!
Seriously some great recommendations but make an appointment.

I have some personal health concerns that I ignored. Both put me in the hospital the second should have killed me. Needed a blood transfusion and got one within about twenty minutes of walking (stumbling) into an ER.

Now, I need to take my own advice and make my own appointment.

Best of luck in the future

For sure get in to see your Doc for labs and tests. If your not taking supplements , start. They help. I take 5. C 1000mg, D, tumeric, mag/potassium/zinc, B complex. Big difference when taking them

When I got all whiny to my doc about muscle weakness - she figured out that I'm anemic based on my CBC (shortage of red blood cells). Told her I'm taking otc B-12 pills for that and she determined that would not help 'cause I probably lacked intrinsic factor (always lacking something).https://www.cedars-sinai.org/health-library/diseases-and-conditions/a/anemia-of-b12-deficiency.html. So..., I was prescribed cyanocobalamin, bought a hundred 25 ga syringes from Amazon and proceeded to shoot up monthly im.
Now I can even remember what I had for breakfast this morning, as well as yesterday.

@SXIPro l’m sorry you are having this problem, but also glad that you started a thread and there is a discussion because we all face this as we age.l face similar problems myself, but have thought that age had a lot to do with it.Interesting comments so far..

Before I retired from the Army, I had a MRI done due to chronic headaches from past concussions. I was diagnosed with mild chronic small vessel ischemic disease which (what I understand) leads to dementia later in life. I have a bad problem with short term memory but not sure if it’s associated with that. Something you might look into. I’m a little younger at 50.

You know, I never actually considered the whole concussion deal. I played a lot of football in my youth along with wrestling, also Karate in my early 20s and, later in life, BJJ for a while. Plus most of my hobbies are rough on my body and occasionally rough on my noggin. Certainly could be a contributing factor.

Worth looking into Hyperbaric chambers if you believe you have a head injury. Most hospitals have them.
Listen to this:

And this one for more technical details.

Anything that you take to help fall asleep (including, sleep aids, pain pills) will make sleep
apnea worse. Basically anything that makes you drowsy has a negative affect on the quality
of your sleep.

If you are taking Vicodin or Norco for pain and you need something to help you fall asleep,
that is a serious red flag. So is pain pills and prescription muscle relaxers.

I started having problems in my 50s
Diabetes, sleep apnea and then Parkinsons
diagnosed 4/19.
Coming up on 1 year of disability at 56
Go see doctor, especially a neurologist.
My GP denied I had Parkinson's for several years before I made him refer me to a neurologist.
Delayed treatment is not ideal

I don't know why but all my doctors and the neurologist stayed away from the P word until
I was shaking on the left and right sides.

Delayed treatment is not ideal

What other treatments are out there besides Carbidopa-Levodopa?
