Surfriding Shark Questions

April 2008 SAN DIEGO -- It was a perfect spring morning for an ocean swim. With the sun shining in a clear blue sky, Dave Martin and his triathlon training group swam past the surfers at Tide Beach on their regular Friday course through cool glassy waters about 150 yards out to sea.Somewhere below, a shark -- presumed to be a great white -- was lurking. It struck around 7 a.m., charging at Martin from below and lifting him vertically out of the water, both legs in its jaws, its serrated teeth slicing deep, fatal gashes.

This is about 300 yards north of my home break. I flew down about 8 days later and had some amazing head high lefts and rights just for me and my buddy, Nobody was in the water.

If I surfed/lived in California I'd post that stuff all the time as crowd control ! Yes Baja heading North along the coast is the migration path plus they haven't eaten for months , I can't believe there is not more encounters with the hordes of people in the water. Wait a minute what if we genetically engineered a ......

They just weren't smart like you, you knew the shark had his fill, and since everyone left, it would move on to more populated feeding grounds!

Though still, anyone actually know if the sound of a motor scares/attracts sharks?

Me smart sweet thanks. From when I was younger I remember not wanting to be in water that I could not see the bottom. It must come down to the #'s. Any summer day tens of thousands of people in the water all up the west coast of the North America and Nobody gets eaten. Kinda of like winning the wrong lottery numbers when it happens. Does that mean you are special, only if you survive I guess.

I have heard stories about Teeth marks on propellers on large boats. I wonder if the jet stirring stuff up would attrack anything, the sound of the motor would scare one off right ???

I figured out a while back that the surf days I dislike the most are when the water is crystal clear. It's happened to me only twice in six years of very occasional surf riding.
But it's sketchy to see everything that goes on in the water. I got separated from the ski I was on and had to swim for it - about 15 yards, no more.
Right as I get to within 3 ft of the ski I see a big dark shape swimming towards me, under the ski. I didn't know it was possible to levitate out of the water and blitz over to the start button, but I did it.
I am pretty sure it was a sea lion that had been hanging out at that spot all day. Occasionally he'd pop his head out to check things out.
Still, very unsettling.

Nothing compares to that feeling..That shiver that goes up your spine when you are in the water away from your board or your ski and you touch or see something you cannot immediatey Identify.

Megalodon? River water beast? Oh wait thats just some seaweed.

I've had a bull shark bite a stainless prop that was trimmed up just out of the water in the Keys.

I am more afraid of manatees and alligators here, I see them all the time riding in the lakes and rivers, but the only thing that has actually hurt me has been jellyfish.

Oh, and we float sometimes in the surf because were we ride, we cant beach, so off shore is the only place to take a break
