shin guards

So I had a bit of carnage yesterday that will put me out for 3 weeks or so. For those of you that use shin pads, what do you use and how do you like them?

I figure soccer shin guards are worthless unless you're wearing a full wetsuit so they're out. I've seen martial arts sparring pads with foot protectors that I think would be nice for using barefooted. I've also seen the dirt bike pads that cover the knee as well but they look beefy and it also looks like the knee guard would bend backwards when water catches it every time you drag a leg...

Martial arts style...

I always use a full lenght john. I have tried soccer ones, they work. I tend to bruise my knees so I got a pair of moto-cross style knee/shin pads which I wear under the wetsuit. They are a bit bulky though. I would say the best for you would be BMX/down hill stuff, like 661 or Dainese knee/shin pads. They are made to be worn as is and have nice straps.

I've been looking a lot but since I've got plenty of time for these things to get to me I keep walking away before making a final decision. I've been looking at various types of guards and I actually like a few options from Lizard Skins the most. A lot of the other brands don't look like the straps are padded, don't have enough straps, look clunky, or don't have much in the way of vents. Here are the ones I'm looking at so far. The one with the knee guard certainly won't fall down but would be huge.

I'm also considering the possibility of wearing dirt biking pants as well. They seem well vented and stretchy.

My home away from home.
I wish redz paintball still made their knee / shin pads. I'd say get a set of those, but they don't make them anymore. I just looked at a few sites, and there aren't any more knee / shin combos. Bummer, cuz the old redz that I still have are excellent. They don't move a lot, don't cut in behind the knee joint, and are tough as nails.

I would go to some sporting goods places and try some on first, to see how they feel and look before buying. The strap placement is key in comfort and function. And what kind of straps too. Stretchy wide nylon with velcro is my favorite.
