Shipping Engines Overseas?

Just wondering if anyone shipped and engine overseas before, and if so, who did it, and how was it done?

I'm specifically interested in getting an engine shipped to Australia, and I'm wanting to know if a nice solid box with plenty of wrapping/padding will be good enough for the job and also who could get it over here for a reasonable price?

I'm not looking to get it over here dirt cheap, just reasonable!

Any ideas would be appreciated.

USPS will probably be the most reasonable price wise. Don't ship engines in boxes. I usually try to ship them in cheap rubbermaid containers or a crate...especially overseas.

A box is not adequate.

At the very least, it should be packed well in a rubbermaid type crate.
Better yet, a purpose built wooden box that the engine is bolted or strapped to.
Shipping cost will be rape.

mine usually come out to 75 bucks UPS in a rubbermaid tote with the lid screwed on... weighs in around 77-78 pounds.

rubbermaid tote is about 22x15x14 i think


im sure going overseas will raise the price by a lot...but $77 in the states from NY to NV

Thanks for the replies guys...

I think based on 60lbs, shipping here is about $600 US. Considering the lack of parts available here, I'm willing to pay it if it's not too steep.

Does anyone have some specs or a link to these Rubbermaid containers?

I had one engine shipped to me in a rubbermaid box but it didn't hold up. When they get hit they shatter. A really thick cardboard box will take more abuse. If you don't pack it right nothing will hold up.

i wrap the motor in two or three thick towels and put bags of air and bubble wrap inside the rubbermaid...there cant be any space for the motor to move otherwise it will break the tote

It'll be more than 60lbs. I shipped a complete 650 Yamaha engine, that came to 83lbs with packaging.

Depends what kind, some of the cheapo clear plastic boxes will shatter. If you get one of the good opaque RUBBERMAID brand containers, I don't think you could break it if you tried.

Wattage, have you checked out through a customs agent whether its possible to ocean-freight it? I've bought a crated ski into NZ that way before at a reasonable rate, decent tracking and no damage. Don't know if they'd do anything that small but no harm in asking.

i think what there are calling a rubbermaid containers, we call eskys or chilly bins. i could be wrong there tho
