Shortblock vs Longblock

See a lot of dof posts not showing the same thing. If it was a auto engine, a short block is the complete bottom block with crankshaft and pistons. A Longblock would be the complete top and bottom end, and all timing components.

What is it for a ski? I'm not retarded and can usually make out what people re talking about, I just like to know the real terms for things is all.

Short block is cases with crank and top end with pistons assembled, but no head? Longblock is a complete engine with stator and ebox, asically drop in?
 
this was already discussed in a thread a while back. who cares. unless you are a professional mechanic, you dont know what you are talking about. if you are buying/selling a block, long or short, you still have to make it crystal clear what is and isnt included.
 
short block should be cases, crank, cylinder, pistons and head
long block should be all of the above plus exhaust and intake manifold and reeds and cages. sometime carbs sometimes complete pipe. sometimes coupler. electronics aren't usually included. but you just have to make certain whats included when buying or selling a "long block" or "short block"

I always think
Short block, cases, crank, cylinder, psiyon, rings, head- everything assembled.
Long block everything above plus full intake and exhuast manifold. carbs and pipe opitional.
Electric's are never included

short block: case halves, crank, pistons, cylinders, and head(most the time)

long block: short block, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, reeds, carb w/arrestor, stator, flywheel, bendix, starter, stator cover, etc...
 
Wats a professional mechanic. Been wondering all day. Seriously. Does that make me an ass?
if you want the best/correct answer to any question, who are you going to ask? somebody that goes to butt college or sac state? why are you asking a question on a forum of shade tree mechanics at best and guys that know less than nothing at worst? you got internet, google it. do some simple research instead of asking for immediate help. a pro mechanic is somebody that went to school and received technical training on mechanical theory and had to pass tests for certifications or licenses and also has X amount of years on the job training. not just some knucklehead that went to harbor freight and bought a set of hand tools and started ripping and tearing. i've seen a lot of your posts , threads and responses, so i'm taking the 5th on your last question. i googled it just to see if my technical training was still in my brain after 30+ years of other things going thru it and i still remembered the correct answers.
 
I was curious is all. Just because most don't know, or don't care, doesn't mean we shouldn't try and get the correct info out there. I see a lot of stuff on here that is various shades of gray, when In reality most of it should be black and white, and could easily if it wasn't full of idiots or people that don't teach themselves. We are here to help each other. Well, at least I am, some are here for their amusement, or just to hate and talk shiat. Which always makes me wonder how the hell talking shiat on the Internet for 5k postsis more fun than being out riding your ski. I'd be out if I didn't have to work tomorrow. Anyways, it's Friday and ima drink some more beers, cheers!!!

Thus reinforcing what Buzzard said. You must clarify to be absolutely sure just because there is so much discrepancy regarding what the term truly entails. I bet there's even discrepancies between training manuals so even the properly educated "professionals" may not all be on the same page.
 
People see things differently I guess. I'm not the type that says this is wrong but how it's been done for years so let's do it this way.

There IS a proper definition for both. Oterwise they wouldn't have seperate individual terms

Forums can be very technical and helpful. It all depends on te members and moderators. People can share info freely, it should be embraced. The key is the desire to help, and a ability to sort through bs. It helps when people only post about the topic at hand also. Hint hint
 
I went to a few websites. Thrust, DASA and XMetal to view what they list/sell as "shortblocks". They seem to share a common parts list of what is included. Maybe us as members could adopt those standards as a "shortblock" definition and anything less or added could be noted. Idk, just a thought. It does seem that most ads for engines listed as a short or long block do have a parts list no matter what the engine is listed as. Have fun guys.
 
Shortblock is usually a pretty easy definition. SBT for instance = Short Block Technologies and their definition is cases, crank, cylinder, pistons, and a head, all assembled. That seems to be pretty cut and dry.

Long block on the other hand differs widely. As mentioned, if selling or buying it is best to clarify all included components in a sale post to avoid any confusion!
