What does the process of shortening a drives shaft involve? Would you simply cut off the end, and cut new splines into the shaft? Has anyone ever shortened one before?

Most people are trying to go longer but surfersmurf is right, the splines are on a larger diameter than the middle of the shaft. There are various sites that sell all the different driveshafts for various ski's. You may be able to get something close to what you really want without all the trouble. Don't forget, when you cut a shaft, it heats it up drastically and that heat will change the strength and stiffness properties of the metal.

When I cut splines in driveshafts they barely heat up at all. Powerhouse, what length do you need? Smurf is right about the SJ shaft, but not all yam shafts are smaller. Some are larger.

Looking to shorten between 3.5" and 3.65". Could you possibly cut the other end of the shaft off, and then re-thread it?

No, you can't cut and rethread the rear of the shaft. If you need to shorten a shaft that much you'll have to start over with a coucshaft, and have it made the correct length.

You can cut and respline a sitdown shaft or cut an SJ shaft using a collar pressed over the splice and welded.

why noy just cut it out of the middle and reweld???

if the current splines are still in good shape, this is the way to do it,use a slide over collar. why do you need to shorten the shaft that much, sort of a odd request.what kinda hull mods are you using for this

There's someone who will do it for you. I would, but I'm honestly too busy to do any more right now.
