Cut flush with the bottom cast piece. That eliminates 1.5 inches. Go from there.

a shortened turn plate and 0Deg bars is good for about -2in. a shortened turn plate and straight bars is good for about -2.5in.

I'm about 6'1'' and I shortened my handlepole 2in and ran a shortened turn plate and 0Deg bars and it definitely wasn't enough. I really wish I would have taken about 3-4in off the pole.

You really just need to ride some ski's with different lengths and decide for yourself.

Did those -4 poles have stock bars, stock turnplate?

Honestly, I am 5'6" and I've ridden skis with -4 poles, -3 in turnplate and bars, and -1 in the pole bracket.
It wasn't too short.

i cut my AC aluminum std length pole down 2 inches, and have been using a std UMI turn plate and 0 degree bars. I just installed a shortened XMW plate with straight bars... that feels much better - and I'm 6 foot tall.

my winter RN project - i cut a std length AC pole 5.5 inches.

being 6'4" you should have long arms giving you no troubles. I'd cut 3" off the pole right away. If you've used a -4" X metal setup you\ve also ran their -2.5" turnplate and stright bars. Looking at around -7" total approx, probably more due to bars and bracket. i think what your proposing will still be too long. but you can always cut more so start small i guess.

thanks id rather start too small and if needed cut more..when yall say youve cut 3-3 1/2 off im guessin it was after you cut it off the bracket?

as a sort of side note:

I like the way the boat turns, jumps, and handles with a short pole
BUT, I have noticed the shorter the pole, the more it hurts my back to ride.

maybe its lack of good strong back muscles, or improper posture, or maybe I have really short arms?

regardless I still run a shorter than stock pole.

yeah, mines the same. for riding surf, for just playing around it's great. the long ride going from the marina to the beach we hang out at... it's murder on the lower back.

no, total. i cut two inches above the bracket. i would cut it, slie back into the brcket and make sure its short enough before epoxying it in. it would suck to have to grind the epoxy out of the bracket twice.

I can understand what you guys mean but why don't you just adjust stance for the short pole?

When I'm in the holds I'm definately stretched out, but when riding distances or trying other tricks that don't necessarily require BOTH feet in the holds its fine. Leave the right foot in the hold, put the left up against the firewall. Still great for stabs, tricks that involve sharp turns (slash, turn sub), straight airs, etc..

Thank when going for inverts drop back in teh holds and stretch it out.

I'm 5'8" and just bought Sluttys setup. Will be -4", -2.5" plate, straight bars, -1" bracket by design. Probabaly -8" total.

I'm going to ram my new WCF footholds as far forward as possible. Will have to cut the bottoms out and reglass over the exhaust tube bu its worth it.

Smaller riders especially need to get their weight forward. IMO. Have to use all the weight advantage we have which is not much. When a 220lb guy throws his weight forward, the ski reacts to the change, when a light rider does, the ski doesn't move as much. But this is just my opinion.

Its doable, just need the skill. Look at Pat Bogart and Pancake, both not huge guys, both throw their skis around like they are Goliaths... And they run short steering setups.

Your a tall dude... I'd take at least 4in. off the pole. If you want more then I'd start changing the steering & pole bracket. It's easier to change the steering parts then to cut the pole. I'm @ 6'0 & have more than 8in. off my setup.
