Super Jet Should I buy a hull without a title? (new york)

I have a buddy that is transferring all of his running gear (and title) from a 96 SJ to an aftermarket hull. I'd like to buy the RN hull, but am not sure if I would be able to get it titled. Is there any way I could register this hull?

The only options I could think of were to purchase a title from someone online (which is somewhat shady), I have receipts from US Composites, so I may be able to title as home made, or I could title it as a different boat.

Is there a right way to do this? Any recommendations or personal experience would be great!

It's not just somewhat shady - it is against federal law and can result in confiscation of your ski. While many do it this way, I wouldn't.

The right way (and ONLY legal way) is to register it as a homebuilt. You already have everything you need. Contact your state Department of Licensing to find out how to go about it.
For me in Washington State, the process took 10 minutes and less than $50.

I would have to say no no and no just like Matt said, its against the law and you have now just posted what you are thinking of doing on the internet.

Have your buddy get a home built title because his is home built then purchase the title with the 96 hull.

OK- so home built it is! He wants to register his as the '96. Thanks guys. Hopefully it isn't too much trouble. DMV in NY is always a hassle! I'm not looking forward to it, but the riding will be worthwhile!

If you have a title in your name then make ID plates to match, legal or not its difficult to get caught, that's what your buddy is doing. Most states require an inspection for homemade boats to make sure someone is not laundering stolen vehicles. Cops may be dumb, but they can usually look at the person and product and tell the difference.

The only right thing to do is to get a title for the aftermarket hull and keep the '96 sj title with the 96' sj. There's other things yoou could do to get away with it but that's the only right way to do it.

I'm with you guys. There are ways to get around it, but I'd rather do it right. I hate to miss out, but this may be a good one to sit out on.

id do all the leg work for this buddy and make it zero hastle to reg his new hull as homebuilt and keep the 96 sj title with the 96 sj. if he really just doesnt want the hastle take the hastle out of the equation while keeping it legal and legit

I agree- unfortunately it just didnt work out. He gave me first dibs and I passed. BTW, I dig the wheels on your stand, Pistolgrip! Great idea!
