SJ Driveshaft...

Anyone have any idea what type of stainless the driveshaft is? I have an old driveshaft I snapped in half from my SJ and another that is cracked; I want to see if I can weld it back together and maybe by some chance in hell I can have it come out straight. I want to know so I can get the right kind of stick for the type of stainless it is.

we were looking at it at work and we guessed it was a 17-4ph
maybe just some 300 series though

I dont think their stainless i know they are a fairly soft and are 3 peices welded togather

theres MANY different types of stainless, most if not all are weldable.
its stainless thats been stress releived. look at the middle peice, its just bar stock. they did it in three peices to save on machining time i presume.
thats not soft at all really.

Just Jb welded my driveshaft to midshaft the only thing I didi not do is take out midshaft but cleaned in there real good going to try it in about half hour at daytona hope. It works

This is a little late, but I can help here.
The OEM Yamaha driveshaft is 17-4 PH (composition determined via Noran System 7 EDS)
The driveshaft is through hardened to ~ 42 HRC +/- 0.5

did you strip the splines or one of them? how did this turn out. and ive never used JB weld but sounds like if you had to take pump or midshaft out its gonna be a pain

It did not work I only put Jb weld on driveshaft I should have taken out midshaft and filled it with Jb weld the fx mafia did it and it worked great they had to cut driveshaft in half to take everything apart when it was time to put new driveshaft in
