that looks like an old 440. as i posted in you other thread they used that carb till 77 then went to a sold based carb in 78'. the motor looks like it has an aluminum cylinder. they used these till around 79 or so then started using a cast iron cylinder after that. If the cylinder is aluminum (try and stick a magnet to it) it is deffenetly not a 550 but it could be a 400. the exhaust is not stock but i can't tell what it is.

it seams like not too many of the younger guys know about these aluminum cyclinders but back in the day they were the thing to have. this was because the cylinder sleeve was the inner wall of the transfer port so when you ported them you could cut huge holes in the base of the transfers and they would run down any 550 you could find.

FYI if you are going to reseal the motor like i advised in your other thread you need to know that this motor likly has a pressed coupler too and it takes different crank seals than the post 82' motors. the kits that claim to be for these have the newer style seals. the only place i have been able to find the older style seals is the kawisaki dealer.

maybe if someone knows of a source for a clomplete pre 82 kit they'll let us know)

Any suggestions on a good Darb for this setup I would be looking for more power so if its aluminum I have an aaadvatage. On other 440s where can I get porting done

we have always used the 44bn. these were stock on 550s after about 85 so finding one isn't too hard. i am not sure about porting. i worked in a shop back when 40s and 50s were the thing to have all my early stuff was ported there. since then i have just used what i leaned and copied from that old stuff to do my porting.

a ported 440 with a 44mm carb and aftermarket exhaust if done right will run in the upper 40s. i think the fastest i ever radared a 440 was 50 but we did a lot to it for a few mph.

anyway if you do any of this you need to start from the ground up reseal the motor first. if the crank case/crank seals are leeking you will have low vaccum and the motor will run erratic, be hard to start and may trash the top end.

ok cool, thanks allot I will have to find a full seal kit then!! the thing started super super fast, faster than anything elseI have ever started in my life! for now im gonna change gas and fixthat seal in carburator base , and see if it will open up at all. the guy i bought from is reasuring me there is no leaks in the motor and that crack in the rubber carburator holder is the problem and that the carb is probly dirty! should I remove carburator and clean the jets ect! can you run sea foam thru this jetski

that is a 44bn (note the 4 screws holding the "air cleaner" on and the 3 mix screws a 38 has 3 and 2). You will need the intake too if you change it. that one looks like a pos but it may be usable.

btw this ski was not converted to premix. all these old skis were premix when they were new. the first ski that had oil injection was the x2. one of my friends got one when they first came out. it was on its third motor by the end of that summer cuz it kept trashing oil pumps.

the 440 and 550 had a sticker by the gas filler that told you the mix but i am sure finding one these days with the sticker still on it isn't likely. i am thinking that they said 32:1 on the sticker but i've always run 40:1 just cuz its an easy one pint to a 5g can mix.

my 87 js300 has oil injection.the 300 was a beginners ski so they didnt want you to get to technical with it.Another thing you should do is clean out that engine bay it looks like hell in there like they left a whole bunch of water in there for a long time.Id have to say thats a old 440 i got a few parts ill sell u if u want to brighten it up a little bit
