SN Pole Options?

Rikster,
will you have any nose piece clearance issues with that ?

I was thinking of doing the same thing. By laying that area flat the pole pivot point will move forward slightly which had me worried about the pole hitting the nose piece.
I know that the nose piece can be cut to fit and your pole will now seam like it's lost some length but will this have an effect on handling ?

If you run a RN pole bracket and you can't get full extension out of the pole, just grind down the stops a little bit. A little off the stops will do a lot at the end of the pole. Also I would recommend that you re-enforce the bracket area and get a big backing plate. The squarenose is VERY flimsy where the pole mounts, so if you run a stationary pole it's pretty much manditory that you re-enforce. If you dont you will be pulling on the mounting area and the whole area will be flexing every time you put the pole up and down. I have 5 layers of re-enforcment and a backing plate on my SN and I still get a little movement in the mounting area. Make sure you run a limiting rope. I would look for a used RN AC Pole because you don't want to spend more money on a pole than the hull is worth.

I have a mold and make my own nose pieces, and on this build, the front nose will be glassed permanently.

Using the stock pole and bracket, I will have to remove the bracket to get the bolts undone, but in the 2.1/2 years of riding SJ's, I have never had to take a pole off yet.

I'm sure there will be some issues to work out as I go, but I guess Custom was never supposed to be easy.:cat37:

If you only run the reinforcement on the underneath of the pole mounting area, then you will probably get movement regardless of how many layers you use.

You should foam in the cavities between the mounting area and the side of the topdeck, then run your reinforcement all the way across and down the topdeck.

This goes with RN's also. My $.02

Ye I actually forgot to mention those crevices, I filled them with 404 filler, the re-enforced over top of that so it would be a flat surface to glass across.

I used 17oz knytex. Keep in mind that the top deck on a squarenose is metton which is basically plastic. It still moves, but barely as much as without re-enforcment. Its always gonna move a little unless you put a sh i tload of layers on there, your yanking on a piece hull with a 3 foot pole its gonna move a little especially when you have the pole tightened down. All I was trying to say was that it needs to be re-enforced with something so you don't tear the mounting area out.

agreed...

Are you sure it's the top deck moving, and not the bracket moving, which is making it seem like the top deck is flexing?

I'm doing a build now, so if you are still getting flex after 5 layers of 17oz fiberglass, I may have to re-think my plans.

I know I put 5 layers of 1208 biax and 1 layer of 10.5 carbon fiber on my Rn, and that thin does not flex at all.

It's not really flexing it's just some very slight movement. I wouldnt worry about it. My ski is still in one piece and doesnt have a single stress crack on it in that area like a stocker would by now.

I have had two seasons on my legdrag bracket and could not be happier. The stock roundnose pole sits perfect when down. I chopped two inches off of it and it is awsome. I did put a hefty backplate on the underside. It just seemed like the right thing to do. I also included some comparison pics of the two poles side by side.

i modded a stock SN bracket to work with a stock RN poleon a square. just some grinding, hook relocating, and alligning. looks much better than any other pole on a square IMO.

the travel want a problem. the more you grind, the further it goes.
