Looking to buy a non-setback 148, can't decide which one to get.

Solas pros:
-Cheaper
-Could replace wear-ring if damaged
-easier impeller replacement
-You can leave the wear-ring in place to preserve pump alignment.

Torrent pros:
-better impeller to wear-ring tolerance
-one piece design allows for better flow
-better fit and finish

My friend went from a 144 solas to a 148 torrent and there was a noticeable difference. Wonder if I will see the same gain out of either 148? Running stock 144 now.

Both setups are fairly new, so anyone that has any experience with either, please post what you think.

three years ago I went from a Solas 144 to a prototype Torrent 148 in my FootRocket W/Dasa 850.

1. Huge improvement on power delivery to the water - flat water flips were much improved - and made my 850 feel like a bigger motor.
2. Way better hookup in sloppy surf conditions

I'm still running that same pump (now with DASA 971) and just replaced the bearings this past spring (only because we wanted to check wear after a few seasons). They did not need to be replaced at all. I am super pleased with this pump. If I change pumps in the future, it will only be to go with a new Torrent 155.

H2O Torrent pumps are top notch IMHO

side note: this past summer I flat landed a big flip off a 2' wave in about knee deep water. Broke one of the mounting ears off the reduction nozzle, but because of the one piece Torrent design I didn't even notice and kept flipping and surf slashing for at least another half hour. when I came in I noticed the broken reduction nozzle. I can't say if a Solas would have held together being a 3 pc design. But I am super impressed with the Torrent.

and to answer on tolerances - they hold better impeller to wall tolerance so you capitalize on all the water flowing through your pump. And with no wear ring, you do not get the corrosion between the wear ring and housing, eventually causing the wear ring to push into your impeller.

Why buy a not setback? Just trying to save money?

Ya, it would set me back a lot more. Would like to keep stock driveshaft.

Frosty, thanks for the post. Made some good points. The solas wearring is solid stainless, so galvanic corrosion won't be an issue.

In full disclosure im associated with Steve from Fast Elements, and was at the booth for World Finals. I had the Torrent 155 TPE ski in the booth. I am biased as I did my first FW non slide out back flips on this ski at WF Sunday and Monday.

The Torrent is 995, how is that more expensive than the Solas at 1039.48 comparing retail to retail? All Fast Elements items were 15% off or had special pricing until today.

The parting line should not create any issues with the Solas.

The Torrent is 100% American made, corrosion protected Stainless.

Torrent is lighter than the two piece Solas becasue there are three less rings for the flanges, and no long SS bolts required to hold it together.

Tolerance are much tighter. Ask anyone who has assembled either.

How many people on here have really removed their pumps leaving the wear ring and then checked allignment?

Quality of the Stainless on the Thialand build Solas compared to USA made Stainless on the Torrent?

Torrent is available in a setback for the same price as the regular pump.

148 Torrent is availble special order for 149 and 150mm sizes.

155 Torrent is available special order for 156 and 157mm sizes.

Torrent is available special order in colors

OEM quality and hardened driveshafts available from H20 Products for 379 for the setback. Some other manufacturers use soft stainless that wears fast and or tolerances are out to to lunch.

Wear ring discussion is valid for a 148 Solas, but do you have a spare wear ring? If not then youll have to order one. The Torrent can be repaired with a sleeve at any competent machine shop. No shipping wait and most likely quite a bit cheaper. $392.59 for replacement Solas wear ring and no one else has one. Argument is that that could be machined also. This argement does not hold for any set back two pc. The impeller wears on the set back portion not the wear ring. I was baffled at this argement when I bought my first set back two piece and noticed the wear pattern was all in the set back stator section.

I test and tune with impellers with same shims just like most have done for years. I only see a left right issue there with no up down if done properly. That should be minimal unless shoe is off or driveshaft is bent, then thats another issue. The midshaft is keeping it close on right left and up down is the main concern which is taken care of with the shims. I always pull motor to go through entire build once dialed in anyway. I build, tune, then re-check all. If your mid shaft is worn the drive shaft will wear also.

Cooling line locations on the Torrent were moved to accomodate free ride/free style cooling lines and trim set ups.

The Torrent was designed for Free ride/Free style riders. What were the others desinged for?

Torrents in stock, ready for shipment. Is the 148 Solas?

32 safety checks done twice on each Torrent by seperate individuals, not 1 out of 100. How many on each Solas?

Torrent sponsors pro and amateur competitors at WF this year. Did Solas? Evan Krefski and Ryan Doberstein were running them in their comp skis. Ryans was a 155mm. Evan finished 3rd place with a 865 SS gas motor, msd enhancer and a Torrent 148 compared to a bunch of 155s in that field. Johnny Leftly has a 155 in his ski and Bruno Jacob's 3rd place finish at Surf Slam was on a 148. David Oski is on a 155 Torrent and has been competing on a 148 at Naples World Finals. More sponsored riders to come for 2016

Solas is a great pump, but so is Torrent. The choice is yours. Call Jet Maniac, Tiger Craft, True Performance Engineering, Rage Composite Works, Free Form Factory, or Fast Elements in the US for details. Other dealers to come for 2016 and more around the world.

More innovations to come from Torrent soon. There are products in the water now and some are "Game Changers"

I paid attention this week at WF :) how did I do?

The h20 pump looks like a awesome piece. Wish they would have the option of 2 part. I pull pump and leave ring in every time for prop tuning. Way faster to do. I don't see one part pumps or set backs as issue for wear. Put calipers on it and order prop to those those specs or mod current prop up . I've seen Solas 148 setup for way less than retail also. Will be interesting to see as time goes by which brand will be willing to price more aggressive and consume the market the way the the 144 Solas mag did over skat

In this case both are already produced. As was the Solas 144 when it took over the market a few yrs ago when price dropped It outsold every other pump in the market 10 fold. It can't be that much more expensive for them to make the 148 a couple mills bigger. After the first adapters buy through initial stock I see big price drops for the solas pump. Steve is a innovator with h20 I'm sure he will hold pace with a very marketable part priced for mass market. I just wish the pump was avail when I saw the first prototype years and yrs ago. I'd of bought it rather than the silicone city skat for surf

See, cheaper is not better. You bought the modded 2 piece 148 from skat and are complaining about it. If you would of put the money down for a one piece skat then you wouldn't have needed all that extra silicone or any silicone at all. The h2o pump is leaps and bounds better than the solas period. How many solas pumps killed wear rings, props, and drive shafts when the bearings came apart. Any reports of h2o pump having this issue? The answer would be no.

I coulda bought the one piece skat. I wanted the sep wear ring for prop tuning and easy pump removal. Having to silicone to ride in surf isn't my fav part but it's worth it leaving the wr in place. That said I may have bought the h20 if it had been done years before

So one of your responses says that you would of bought the one piece h2o over the 2 piece skat, had the h2o been available at the time. Next post you say that you may have bought it instead of the skat. As for prop tuning I just mark where the ears go, up and down is not going to change. Once the prop is dialed then I can pull motor and midshaft and correct if needed, most cases its not. Also keep in mind solas does not offer a setback option and i don't see that happening any time soon.

I was speaking from my mindset years before when I first saw prototype. I had never seen the punched out 2 part skat as I'm sure most people had not. I've never noticed a diff with setback pumps in slow speed surf riding. I'm assuming most riders switching from Solas 144 or stock don't want spend the extra 350 on a new shaft anyway. Wonder how many h20 pumps sell as setback vs standard
