Other Solas mag installation help

Most of you will laugh but I will be building a solas mag tomorrow for the first time.. Im just being very overcautious and want to make sure i press the bearings right.. Is there a thread for dummies on bearing installation?

Me and a buddie tried it and thought it went fine, but messed up a bearing. 10 minute ride to seized pump. $40 to have the local machine shop press it apart and press new bearings back in. IMO machine shop is the way to go. It's what they do and is easy for them. Just my .02 there.

I work in a machine shop. I will have a press to work with.
as far as I know there is a front and back to the bearings and you have to install them a certain way..?

I just did this a few months ago. It was a bit tricky to do with my press. I was nervous of the bearings/inner race coming out from the outer race but ended up being no problem. Best bet is to google the service manual bc I cant really remember exactly how I did it. Good luck

I forgot the steps but I had to figure out the same thing. It was real easy once I learned what goes first. I may have saved the link to the info I found on here but its on my other computer

Sent mine to Chris "jetmaniac", to do mine. If it was a cheap pump, I would attempt it but if you're talking something pricey, then....well it is your choice...IMO . Sorry, no instructions.

The tricky part is pressing the outer and inner race at the same time. The outer race goes inside the housing and the inner race goes over the shaft. So both races need to be pressed in with equal pressure on both, so the ball bearings don't get jammed into the races and make impressions and screw up the bearing. That's how we messed up. But if you work at a machine shop, this will be a no brainer for ya then. You'll get it there and go, "Oh.... This is easy" It's pretty straight forward. You'll do fine. To check how you did, spin it a bit very slowly (before you install the seals) and it should be super smooth, with no bumps, or hang ups.

Yo Matt, me and james simply pounded them out/in but had to use a heat torch. It really is a piece of cake, just take notes when taking the stocker apart

before you install the seals?!? seriously?

lube up seal area with grease. wipe seal outer edges with grease. you can usually press them in by hand. spring facing out on the first seal in. then the metal looking seal with the recess facing out. make sure it's seated about 3mm from the surface of the seal area. lube up the bearing area where the bearing has to go over the front of the shaft first. lube up inside of the bearing seating area. i use a vice hold on the inner part of the bearing. hit the driveshaft until it's seated all the way. lube the top bearing area and inner part on the bearing. get it flush. hit it on with a hammer. once it's flush with the back of the shaft have a socket or something of the same size of the inner part of the bearing that can go over the driveshaft. finish seating the bearing. pack in between the bearings full of grease. grease the inside of the pump generously. grease out part of bearings. use something that will press on the inside and out side of the bearing at the same time. then press into pump. pack cone then install it. you're done in seriously 10 minutes.

I'm not alone then. Even after reading all of this stuff I still think I did it right!!!!!

Went together very smoothly. If I did it correctly, it was pretty simple. We had tubing at the shop to cover the inner and outer races of the bearings. I think that would be the most tricky part if you didn't have the right tools.. I guess there's only one way to find out if its right!!
