solas pump question

I'm switching props on my solas mag. Had a hooker 9/15 and going with a skat 10/16. My question is... should there be any gap between the prop and the mag pump? The hooker sat tightly close to the pump and the skat sits about 1-1.5 mm away. Is that normal?

Hooker is cut back further. Your new prop is not, which is the reason for the gap.

I believe so, the Hookers are a cut back impeller meaning they cut the inside of where they seat up against the impeller shaft. The point is to set the impeller back further into the pump, sometimes though it's too much and they need to be shimmed out and away from the pump or else they bind and lock up the impeller to the pump core. When setting up my Hooker in my OEM pump I had to shim it out by 3mm if I remember correctly. Mine sits back not quite 1mm from the core.

The closer the prop sits to the vanes, the more load it puts on the motor, but it's also more efficient. I always set mine up so they are as close to the vanes as possible. Last prop I had, the trailing edge of the blades would hit the vanes so I added just enough shim so they didn't.

1-1.5 sounds close for a skat prop in a solas, Mine was probably 5 or 6, maybe you arent using the prop rubber/steel washer that comes stock?

My hooker was tighter than this on my stock pump. Is this normal, and I just need to get it cut back more? Can't say I've heard of anyone cutting back hookers more than they already are..

Thats not 1-1.5 mm imo. Thats 5-7. I measure from inner blade to stator fin. That photo appears to be about 5mm

I was going off the distance from the prop hub to the pump hub. If that's what you callit

I would cut that back some. You can even have the hub cut back too so the blades sit even closer to the vanes.

It depends on how good you are at pump tuning. If you want it cut and turned back around super fast contact @speedysprocket

It will depend on your set up, goals, etc. As stated above, a cut back impeller "loads" the pump harder. Sitting more forward like in your pick will "loosen" the impeller bite. Sometimes this is needed, sometimes it is not.

All good data here. One thing all Solas need is a cut back prop, IMO they are way too loose. It will just soften the bottom end hit, but if you prop correctly it wont matter, but if you took you recomendation from someone who had theirs cut back it will hit softer.
