who does it and where?

Ive been riding in the surf a lot lately by myself and it sure is different. Gearhart on the Oregon coast- good friend has a house on the golf course too-

Its totally fun until it comes time to load up. I have to float my ski in the waves and go get my tote then push the tote under the ski and pull her out. Not too bad but not the most fun.

I stay kinda close in for the most part, but with my ski running so good and the back sets clean I venture out for some surfing. I know that if I had a break down or lost my ski I could easily swim in and my ski will come to shore from the tide.

I hear a lot about never riding alone and I just don't think its a bid deal as long as its not winter surf conditions.

so does any one else ride solo in the salt?

Dumb idea in my opinion. Do you atleast have someone on shore with you? What if you hit your head and drown? Not worth the riding solo in my opinion regardless of condition, unless may they are just ankle slappers. But then would you really consider it surf????

Get a tote with a winch and you can ride it in further into the sand and use the winch to get it on the tote instead of floating it on.

well, I nose dived..endo'd and the boat came up upside down about 100 yards away on an outgoing tide



I got back to it about 10 mins (felt like 10 years) later...and I literally remmeer telling myself "this is it, swim harder or you are DONE"

got back to it..dont know how it fired up on the first click and that wa the last time I rode alone on anything but a lake

even with my buddies around, I had a similar experience, except I was telling myself, "I'll never ride again, this $hit ain't worth it", in double over head surf. I had about 2 more minutes before I was gonna let go of my SJ.

Well I'm still riding, but after that we have a coordinated tow system worked out between our normal group of riders.

I must be a big puss... because even with the good bigfoot cart I cant pull my ski back up the sand 150'-200' by myself. I have no problem getting it into the water. There are a bunch of times I would have ridden by myself if the surf is clean and less than waist high, but I know I'd never be able to make the cart pull back off the beach in the jersey quicksand...especially after surfriding all day. I have ridden once in the ocean by myself, but I drove my jeep on the beach with the beachcart tied to the trailer hitch. (cant get away with that in the summer).

I think Swanny only used the tote to get the ski up to the trailer, they can drive on the beaches out there and they are hard packed if not mistaken.

Jersey sand is ridiculous. It is sooo soft.

I ride alone in small waves, but always close enough where I can swim to shore.

I dont use a trailer. I pull it out of the surf on the tote and leave it till I drive my truck thirty yards down to my ski (why waste energy dragging it to the truck). My tote is almost even with my tundra and I just push it in the back and drive to my buddys house 300 yards away.

I couldnt pull my golfing buddies away from the course or the US Open. They could just turn their heads at the house and watch me so why go down to the beach they asked hahah.

Every day tom down here in Oceanside has not missed a day in two and a half years...literally not missed a day He is in the water just before sunrise every day. Even when we are getting in the water at like 7:30 he is already done. I've found him swimming his ski the mile plus back to the harbor alone. That guy really needs some kind of award.

I don't think it is a good idea to ride alone...Mr. Matt Smith went to the hospital today after having the ski land on him from about 15 feet out. Had he been alone, it would have been a much more serious situation for him.

I would never reccomend that anyone ride alone in the surf. But I don't care if you do, so long as you are fully aware of the risks you are taking. And you are competent rider like Swanny.

my biggest fear of riding alone has always been, what if i smack my head and get knocked out, break a leg or have a back injury?at least with a buddy looking out for you you'll still have a chance.

you dont need a winch to load your ski alone. after watchin how monson does it, its pretty easy, even with a high riding tote like my kg.

i would ride alone, and sometimes i wish i was on some of the clean days on small beaches. but never if i had to ride in a remote spot, or a long way from my truck. i wouldnt go crazy, but id surf the waves and mess around no prob.

i ride alone quite a bit. it's nice in the sense that i dont have someone constantly stealing the wave i've been following setting up for a re-entry.

my situation is that (in theory) i have a lifeguard who is watching at the zone but they're gone half the time. i've also ridden ponce and matanzas by myself quite a bit which isnt probably the smartest thing but again it's nice to have the place to yourself.

since i dont backflip or barrel roll i guess i'm maybe less likely to ko myself. i figure if i go out while jetskiing at least i died happy.

alot of times if the crowd is going to one beach, i head the other way.

I hear that. I spent Sunday and Monday trucking around Torrey Pines. I got tickets for both days for 75$ and although it was fun it will be my last big event I go to. Just too f'n crowed. They were expectin 5k for Monday and there was 24K. It is a freakin zoo anywhere at a major. 56K on Sunday.

I even made it on TV twice on Monday.

Competent I dont know, I am kinda a hack thats for sure but I would never try to do too much solo, just have fun and enjoy the water.

I do think it depends on where you ride and the conditions that is a given. It just is so easy for me lately with my buddies houses but no other skiers. Oceanside is different than Gearhart for sure.

Hope Matt is well, sounds harsh.

You got to see some historic stuff right there though willy, good for you but monday must have been a complete zoo. you carry a ghin? Best deal in the area is Encinitas-
