Someone to help me problem solve..

Thought I would finish riding my x-2 this summer before build plans start to commence. But recently it developed a small problem, and I was hoping someone would be able to tell me what it is..
ENGINE: Stock silver motor 650, small carb, standard filter etc, fuel pump (external). Everything pretty much stock, with the fuel lines made more simple and primer kit installed.

Whats happening starts fine, runs fine for 15min or so then when I hit the accelerator the engine stalls, I give it a prime and it takes off quick again for a few seconds then like a slug again and maybe stall if i open up full throttle. Usually I would bring it in to sit it for 15min when i take it out after that time it will get another 10min of full throttle riding before the same problem again….
It sounds very much like a fuel problem, in the way that when I open the throttle it dies, like maybe fuel pump… But that doesn’t really make much sense, when it works again when cooled down… Any ideas???
Spark strong after a while??? It has new plugs also.

Make sure you have a full charged battery. If it starts doingthat after riding it for awhile, it is the stator. My friend's 650 SX did the exact same thing. It would run great for awhile and once the battery wore down, it would run like crap.

If it isn't that, I would suspect a seized top end. Did you do a compression test? When I stuck the piston rings after some WOT runs on a lean jetted ski once, it did the exact same thing. Does it idle rough?

Thanks everyone for the advice....

The batt seems to be holding charge well, and seems to be charging well also, maybe cutting back the leads wouldent do anyharm, but that shouldent affect the running of the engine

yeah well the engine is old, but i did do a comp test and it was 120psi on both pots... Seized top end?? it starts fine everytime and seems to idle quite well. ??????

x2 ski

yeah ok, that way i can remove the external pump as well right? (whats that thing called)?? I have a carb from a 750sx just need to find a manifold for it, any notiable performance to be had?.... mmm it feels like a fuel problem, but it doesnt make much scence if it was.

Before you ditch anything test a few more things in the fuel system. It could be your fuel pump is having a problem or maybe the tank vent is clogged.

The tank vent is one way and let air in the tank but will not let air out. If this is clogged/stopped up as you ride you are collapsing the tank as you ride. You can check the vent or test ride it and when it stops bring it to shore and see if the tank expands when you open the gas fill lid.
