Super Jet Soon to be SJ owner and new to forum

Hey All,

New to the forum here and pretty fresh to the standup world. Been wanting a standup for a long time now and finally got to ride one for a week last summer... hooked. absolutely hooked. Been riding motocross since a young age and always knew I would be decent on a ski and would really enjoy it. First few days of riding and was already doing nose stabs, ollies, drifts and massive submarines - super fun. (prolly need to learn some lingo there lol)

I've got my eyes on an '06 SJ for hopefully $3700 with UMI bars, prop, and worx dominator ride plate. Motor is stock and compression was 150psi each. Ski looks a little beat up cosmetically - fiberglass looks a bit dinged up and chipped. Not sure how easy that stuff is to fix and only a close look will tell me more about stress cracks and what not. Main question for you guys is some advice on buying ones first SJ. Is there any reason not to buy a SN? any major differences between '96-'08 vs +'08? I've read that early SN's are really sought after, but I'm not sure why... bulletproof? I know a 701 SN is a real find.. but any differences in handling between SN/RN?

I've spent a few days now with my eyes peeled on this forum - reading a lot and trying to learn the ropes of SJ's. What are major things to physically look at when examining a used ski? I'm plenty handy and enjoy tinkering with motors and learning more about how to work on engines carbs etc... I just finished my M.Sc. in aerospace engineering so I hope thats worth something haha! Main stuff I'm interested in doing is freeride/freestyle riding, maybe one day get into surf but I'll be living in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho as of tomorrow, not much surf there ;)

Seems like a great community here and really looking forward to finding my first SJ and learning from all of you!

Cheers!

Speedy

Trying to answer your OP (original post) but I have some questions

SN = Square Nose Super Jet (90 - 95)
RN = Round Nose Super jet (96+)

There is some difference with +08 RN as Yamaha moved the intake tract forward, 2" shorter handle-pole, better impeller, and reduced steering throw (A deal breaker for some, but fixable).

That said, I believe your looking at a 2006 RN SJ, and if your okay with the cosmetics I would be checking out the following:

bond rail for separation
the handle pole mounting area for structural damage
impeller + wear ring for wear
Compression test is a must, and bring a battery as that is a common reason people won't/can't turn over skis
Underside of ski for wear, and large dings
Test ride if possible is well worth the hassel.

That's it for now. Good luck

If your gonna be in Idaho there is a pretty good group of guys over there. Look up Spokane area freeriders on Facebook. Good luck with the ski and welcome!

Thanks for the input! Sorry that may have been confusing.. I was asking if there is there any reason not to buy a SN and separately asking the differences between '96-'08 and +'08 RN. But you cleared that up mostly.. so what's pros and cons of buying a SN?

First off great profile pic, I'm a massive TPB fan. I'll check out that group and see if I can find some riding buddies. Thanks!

How do you inspect the impeller and wear ring?

I had 3 SN and loved them all. The biggest difference that I noticed other that the obvious looks is the age.Going from a 1990 hull with tired inserts and structure to a 2015 hull was night and day on my maintenance.

No more fighting worn out inserts and other peoples mistakes. Not being scared to pull the pump or engine for fear of inserts was annoying. Some of that fear was me being young and inexperienced, but older hulls didn't help.

Thinking back the Pole was a point of contention as well. I put on a Hazard Bracket and a RN pole that I cut down multiple times from full length down to -7" and it made a word of difference at 5'10" tall.

Inspecting the impeller can be done by crawling under the trailer with a good flashlight and checking it out via the intake grate. It isn't ideal, but you have a chance of seeing potential damage.

All good stuff, thanks!

I am the admin for the Spokane Area Freeriders, give us a shout. Always looking to ride with new people.

As for your original questions, my advice would be get a RN with some bolt-ons since your price range is right there. And make sure you get a compression test and ride the thing. One thing you will learn about skis, they will run like a champ on the trailer, but once you put them in the water its a whole new ballgame.

I live in post falls, about 5mins from Coeur D alene

Check out the wikipedia page for info on the different changes over the years and which SN you may want. The 94-95 has the larger 701 engine.

I think the previous replies have everything else covered.

Take your time and find the right ski, you don't want to pick up someone else's mistakes (or maybe you do, but I know I don't!).
