The closest spot for you to ride waves is Oceanside. If you're a weekend warrior show up at the Oceanside launch ramp next Saturday at 7am to ride with the Oside crew. Surf newbs are always welcome. You'll meet a lot of like minded people. One of the best things about are sport is that beginners, seasoned vets and full on pros can all ride together

Their really a bunch of good people and the best surf riders around ride there! Don't forget the jk freeride at Pismo beach in October

Is there any type of permits that I need to have to ride in the ocean so I can pick them up before I meet you guys? Sweet so it's a good place to watch some good riders!

Oh yea you'll catch some of the best surf riders In the world there . It's a 2 miles ride from the harbor to the spot that's legal to ride a stock ski is good for about 2hours total to ride .

Legal wise, just make sure you have visible and current registration ride slow in the harbor and your pretty much set, buildge pumps on both skis and your standup hood straps and a limit rope are a must if you haven't rode surf before

Look up in riding groupes "Oside Crew" post in there and theirs people who ride early in the morning 4-6 or even 7 times a week before work.

Good luck and enjoy

Oceanside x1000. I only had the privilege of going there once. Met some legends while I was there and noobed it up in the surf myself. I was unfortunate to go there during freakish cold weather but it still kicked ass. The water is about as glassy as it can get for surf (not much wind chop) and the waves are relatively predictable and sizable with a good curl to them if you're looking for some awesome airtime. I don't think my opinion would be far off from saying Oceanside is the best surf spot in the US.

I rather quit then sit!
You don't need any permits to ride in the ocean, just need to have your skis registered thru the DMV.

There seems to always be riders in Oceanside. Got there at 9am once, parking situation sucked, but good surf.

Question from the ranks of a noob tube, so I need a bilge pump on my SJ to ride in the ocean? I don't have one of those at the moment.

It is highly recommended. If for some reason you end up sucked over the falls or bail and ski is not running and the wave gets it, a bilge pump is the only thing that will get the water out and possibly keep it from sinking. the stock bilge syphon works great but the ski needs to be running.

Ok, thanks. I'll add that to my list of surf gear. I'll look at the existing threads for gathering up the appropriate gear.
