I'm considering getting a spare ski for friends to ride. I've found some nice 550s with the typical mods (pipe, heads, etc) for around 1k. I've also found some decent fx-1 and blasters for around $3k. I don't wanna blow more than 3k for a spare ski and I want to fit it on the large single pwc trailer I have my SJ on.

It would be cool to have a second ski that I'd want to ride too (I have a nicely set up SJ). The 550 is a cool idea because it's easy on the wallet but I doubt it's really something I'll want to ride much? I've had a blaster in the past and I could see myself getting some use out of that. An fx-1 I've never ridden but I'm definitely intrigued with this option the most.

Which would you choose and why?

I'm shocked there isnt more love for an FX-1. I've never ridden one but I'm leaning towards that. I figure it could bring more stand up riders into the sport, too!

If it wasn't for a friends 440 back in 2004 I might have never had my eyes opened to stand ups! Plus I just really wanna ride an fx-1 Haha. Are they a dog with just a pipe and prop to start off with?

I have superjets, blasters, fx1, and aftermarket skis.

Blasters are cool but get boring really fast. You can basically just go fast and slide. Some people do 180 stabs on them for the past 10 years tho. I will always own one

Superjets are the all around ski that anyone can ride. They are easily modified on the cheap because of an abundance of parts.

The fx1 to me is the best ski you can get besides aftermarket. Its 50 pounds lighter and considerably shorter than a superjet. I have owned a 144 swapped and a stock. Stock with a prop is the best imo. Fx1 ride alot like a 550, that actually starts and has power.

I love my FX1, but for a backup ski if I were you I'd get the B1. It's easier to ride than the FX1 or 550 for your friends, and it would be a change of pace for you since you already have the SJ. I have all 3 (SJ FX1 and B1) and enjoy them all for different reasons.

I'd get a 2nd Superjet, any RN. They're really the most versatile ski and won't lose any value. B1's are okay, I just don't enjoy riding them much. Fx1's are cool, but just a bit underpowered, not enough pump.

That being said, I've got a B1 (selling soon), FX-1, few Superjets, some AM skis. The Superjet is still the best ski ever made, such a good value (fun/$).

Probably because the price of a clean fx1, you can sharpen the budget just a little bit and have a way better riding hull. People hype fx1's because they are rare, but in reality they are bad for cruising, don't hook up, and aren't capable of doing any more tricks than your average superjet. Not worth the money.

I had an FX1 with the 144 swap as one of my skis. Also had a SJ and aquabot. No one liked riding the FX1 because it was 'too hard'. everyone always jumped on the SJ. If i had to choose from your list I'd go B1 (as much as I hate to say it). If a SN was on the list I'd go with that.

I wouldn't pick the 550 because, well, just not as reliable or powerful as something 701 based. I went from that to an FX1 and night and day.

You guys are starting to sway me back towards a b1. I'd prefer to find a nice condition b1 with a pipe and heads for 3k or less but I havent seen any in that price range.

I'm looking at a really mint (looks brand new) 96 b1 but she is bone stock. Might consider it for the right price but man I'm worried a stock b1 will be boring.

When I think about a rental ski I figure I want something easy to ride for beginners. Relatively speaking B1, FX1, and 550 are harder to ride. All for different reasons but still more difficult than a SN. My rental is an 08 SJ which is like your 13 very easy to ride and I always teach people on that and they love it. Maybe you should look at this as a time to upgrade to aftermarket and keep your 13 as your rental. Just saying...

Just bought my 13 a few weeks ago after being out of the sport for 12 years lol. Haven't even ridden it yet!

I dont want another SJ because I want something I'd want to ride, too. So for me it's those 3 skis. Well, mostly the b1 and Fx1. The 550 is just an idea because they're cheap.

I think you just need to get what you want to ride, either a B1or a FX-1. I don't know why your friends should even get a choice or say in a free ride that you are paying for.

I have a RN, SN, HX, 96 XP, 01 XP and an 03' GTI. I love all of them for different reasons and it is nice to pick whatever one catches my eye in the morning.

I have a FR2 EVO and I bought my wife 91 550sx years ago. The 550's are not the easiest skis to learn on. I'm not a fan of the B1 because deep water starts suck (for me anyway). FX1's are also narrow and not the best learner skis. With your budget, I would look for a Square nose then put a RN shortened pole on it. Keep it simple. I'm also building a RN "friends and family" ski right now with all of the parts I have swapped out of my Rickter throughout the years.20190415_220633.jpg20190326_171238.jpg
