OK, say I go to my sponsor and get 4 parts. He gives me 2 for free and charges me cost for the other 2. Should I say screw you and go get another sponsor? How many companies in this sport can you go to? How many companies are going to give you everything you need free?

For other uses, see Sponsor (disambiguation).

To sponsor something is to support an event, activity, person, or organization financially or through the provision of products or services. A sponsor is the individual or group that provides the support, similar to a benefactor. Sponsorship typically benefits both the recipient (by providing material benefits) as well as the sponsor (as a marketing tool that enhances the sponsor's public image and provides access to a wider audience).

Sponsorship may be an arrangement to exchange advertising for the responsibility of funding a popular event or entity. For example, a corporate entity may provide equipment for a famous athlete or sports team in exchange for brand recognition. The sponsor earns popularity this way while the sponsored can save a lot of money. This type of sponsorship, known as cause-related, is prominent in the sports, arts, media and charity sectors.

When commercial radio stations began broadcasting in the early 1920s, the programs were aired without advertising. Many radio stations were established by radio equipment manufacturers and retailers and programming was provided to sell radio transmitters and receivers. This led to a system where radio and television programs were financed by selling sponsorship rights to businesses. Eventually, the broadcasters began selling smaller blocks of advertising time to several businesses.

Sponsorship is also becoming increasingly important in education. Many companies want their logo on sponsored equipment in return. Formula One teams, for example, have heavily relied on the income from tobacco advertising. Other types of sponsorships revolve around companies paying for parts of television broadcasts and sporting events which bear their name. For example college bowl games now contain the name of their sponsor such as the Tostito's Fiesta Bowl.

Many times a company's motives for sponsorship are altruistic in order to create goodwill in the community which increases their good reputation. However, sponsorship is more commonly used to derive benefit from the associations created for a company's brand(s) or image as a result of the sponsorship.

People may sponsor an individual or group of people to undertake a fundraising task, usually for a charity or other cause requiring funding.

Sponsorship belongs to the promotional tool of Public Relations.

wow, way to keep the status quo in place guys...

jealous? me? no, not really...i just think "sponsored" riders should see more out of their sponsors, but if you guys like getting treated like tools, so be it...

nice definition harrison...although i missed the part where it defined it as paying for product and providing marketing...wikipedia must be out of date or something...

do i think every am should get a free ski? no, of course not. but how many of you with sponsorships get anything free? anything at all. would it kill some of the larger companies to throw a free shirt to a rider every once in awhile...

maybe instead of "sponsoring" 200 people through sponsor house, we could sponsor ,say, 10 people but make it a little more worthwhile to those ten people? money for entry fees...travel costs to compete...lodging expense while at comps...stuff like that...that is what will help the sport gain more exposure...we have people starting to put more events (rides, races, etc) together...does it not make sense that it is in a sponsors best interest to get their riders there? want to see bigger starting lines at races? i think alot of people would go if their sponsor said "ill cover entry" "or here is $100.00 for gas to get to the event"...that would go ALOT further in promoting and growing the sport than a discount on a product...

if you are competing in anything, then i would think you have moved past the "i do this just for fun" mind set...shouldn't the rest of your actions and dealings?

I got my free T Shirts from Hydroturf........ So, yeah, I got some free goods there......... ;)

Hey Chris, years ago, sponsorship was alot more than it is now. The OEM's killed the aftermarket companies when they forced the IJSBA to do away with Mod Class and brought in the Superstock Class....... the companies were rolling in the change, but after that it killed several companies...... Most of the aftermarket companies cannot afford to pay out, plus with the non existance of a true "National Tour" (It is making a comeback) there was not really any return on their investments, so many went to grassroots sponsorship (Discounts). It is helping many of us out there out, in return yes, we do promote them. I do have a few sponsors who have given me some money, not enough to cover the season but enough to cover most of my expenses at the Nationals last year.......

I know, we are debating opinions, but it is all good.

point 1)
its been said before and ill repeat it........ if a "sponsorship" is a discount on a product that u dont have to buy anyways (ie// u are spending "jetski money" on a product unnecessary to compete to take advantage of said discount) it isnt a sponsorship.......... if a sponsorship costs u more money then it saves u (ie// discount on parts that u normally wouldnt buy anyways but u spend money on to take advantage of said discount) it isnt a sponsorship......... for example if you have a sponsor that is going to give you a 20% discount on lanyards for kill switches.......... and you dont even run a lanyard........ is that a sponsorship?

subsection b)
lets say u receive a 10% discount on jet ski parts from jims jetskis..... this is your sponsorship package......... well now in return u toss a big honkin JIMS JETSKIS sticker set on your new ski.......... and on your hat........... and your wetsuit......... and your trailer (or trailor...... which ever one you live in lol).... cuz thats what you do for a sponsor..... rep his stuff right?........ well now uncle toms moonshine decides he wants in on the ground floor to...... he knows your a drunk and he knows he could sponsor your with free liquor to get his name on the side of your jetski, truck and trailor also........ so he offers you 1 free bottle of moon shine a week............ so now you have 2 sponsors........ your movin up in the world......... well now you go to the daytona freeride...... jim knows slutty oragnized a hell of a ride..... and he also knows that your goin........ figures her is a chance to be repped well on the beach by you.......... and then sell a buch of stuff right next to your truck when his name is fresh in everyones mind thanks to you repping him so hard on the beach........... Uncle tom runs into saki at a bar the week before the daytona freeride ........ saki blubbers some drunkin comments about it...... uncle tom now starts thinkin........ well hell these guys are gonna wanna party....... his name will be fresh in their minds from your quality representation on the water.......... so he sets up shop next to jim........ he and jim start talking ............... YOU JUST LOST TO SPONSORS...... MORE IMPORTANTLY YOU JUST TURNED TWO SPONSORS OFF TO THE SPORT AS A WHOLE......... TWO SPONSORS THAT HAD REAL MONEY TO SPEND WITH THE SPORT IF THEY HAD JUST BEEN TREATED MORE PROFESSIONALLY!......... see heres the issue....... what you guys dont get is that sponsorship is money plain and simple......... jim and tom just started talking....... tom found out he was getting swindled....... see jim just filled him in on the fact that you were actually paying jim to advertise for jim........ no you werent you say?...... yes you were....... jim sells wetsuits for 200 dollars .....you need a wetsuit.......... your "sponsored" says so right on the side of your ski......... you go in and get your wetsuit at your 10 percent discount....... spent 180 bucks or so right?........ jim buys wetsuits at 100 bucks a pop and being in the retail buisness he takes a standard markup of 100% (using round numbers here markup is probably higher than that) which means u just paid jim 80 bucks profit for that wet suit........... tom on the other hand he sells moonshine for a living at 100 bucks a gallon....... it costs him 0 bux a gallon to make it...... and he has sponsored you for 20 weeks now....... at a gallon a week his sponsorship total equals $1000 hes paid to date to have the right to be repped on your ski......... well now tom feels ripped off..... and jim feels extremely uncomfortable with the situation....... tom comes to you and says he either wants his money back or he wants better representation....... jim says fu he doesnt want to renegotiate his contract its not his problem....... see where im going with this? you just repped both companies equally yet didnt receive anywhere near equal compensation........ the start of this thread may very possibly be an example of this.......... every sponsor you have should be assigned a dollar amount.........that is your job when taking them on as a sponsor....... and they should be repped according to the tiers u set up in your sponsorship packaging .......... your shouldnt even rep two sponsors in the same thread........ but i know that is a pretty common practice also..........

chapter 12) what alot of you guys need to understand is whether your "amateur" or "pro" if your accepting sponosrship its BUISNESS......... if you cant and wont treat it like that you shouldnt be looking for "sponsorship" ....... because your just going to hurt the future of sponsorship for all parties involved........ and if reading everything i wrote makes you want to stop and reply with a "i think your maybe looking a bit to hard at this " or " i think your going overboard" or even "whats the big deal its just a discount on sunglasses" type responses......... then you have no place in the business of sponsorship and you probably should rethink why you even need sponsors....... are you even really offering them anything for their money? are you possibly taking and diluting the "sponosrship pool" for a substandard dollar amount when somone more professional and more willing to put the effort into their sponsor could possibly get something real from this business transaction.......... think about that next time your approached by a person who wants to sponsor you with a discount on wet suits when you know u cant even barrelroll........ and b4 you take the deal just so you can say "look at me im sponsored" be honest with the wetsuit guy....... and maybe try responding with "yah know i think your money might be better spent with pro rider x" "ill set you up a meeting with him and if that doesnt work out we can talk"........ i dunno about you guys but if im the sponsor and you show me how i can get a MUCH better return for my dollar id probably extend a "thank you" to you also........... so will probably the pro rider who really needs the sponsorship to eat.......... im not saying you should give away all your sponsors....... im just saying that if you think a better rider or buisness person could extract more money for better representation it would be better for the sport in the long hall ans just set the bar higher for sponsors when your at a level on par with other pros............. i guess what im basically saying is dont sell yourself short ........... because your shorting everyone involved........you, the sponsor, and the "sport".............

1ST AND FOREMOST) SPONSORSHIP IS BUISNESS NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS.......... TREAT IT AS SUCH OR DONT GET INVOLVED!
