The Penguin

triple secret probation
I'll even make the roadtrip - but I've got plans every weekend until November.

I can tell you that after talking to someone from the SPI tourism board (or whatever they are called) - they had no good suggestions for a location there. The closest access point to a hotel was 2 or 3 miles away...and it was a walkover (I think) with vehicle parking behind the dunes. I don't think that will work with this group.

we have nearly 400 miles of coastline in TX and very little of it "works" for the type of event we want to have. (of this size) - Smaller weekend rides might work out fine.

if you are serious about trying to find another spot - here's basically what I told SPI tourism I was looking for.

vehicular beach access (with 200 linear yds of beach available for parking) with nearby hotels, rental houses & camping/RV. Beach camping must be allowed.

must be able to bring fuel cans and have fuel within a reasonable distance

must have convenience or grocery store nearby

OK, Glen, but can we have a no-joint-lock rule on my shoulders? They pop out too easy as it is :indifferent:

Jonny, we already volunteered your truck

Penguin, I know we've been round this track before. Thanks for the info. I'm trying to hunt down locals who can fill us in a little more.

Oh look, I found a nice little racist smiley > :006:

Lets have two rides I would make both of them.
I am not drinker but like the social aspect of the CB ride.
I have spent some time at Port A,Johnny Law is pretty thick and dont have a sense of humor around spring break.
CB in march
Port A in april
Just my .02

We rode in Port A about........hmmmmmm............well a long time ago (I was on a 77 js400 thats how long it was) and we stayed in a condo right off the beach, drove onto the beach and unloaded the boats, and got the poop stung out of us by jellyfish and mosquito's. Really no Jonny Law but it was in late September. I'm with Skinnyman, make it two seperate rides

I don't think anything needs to move, Crystal Beach is a blast, Sean puts together a great event and I am happy we could contribute this year. 2 or 3 of these a year isn't enough. I will join the Recon to establish an additional destination, I know there is a Cen-Tex group that is behind the idea and getting together more often should be the goal.

I do have an interest in having a rotational change of venue. It doesn't have to be the 'CB' ride, but definitely planned far enough out that the groupies can join if they wish.

I hope that bluffskier doesn't mind me posting his PM:

I ride around Packery Channel in Corpus Christi on Padre island. What is good is that there is a boat ramp about 1/2 mile up the channel, right by the surf. There is free camping on the beach with a bunch porta-potties around, and the law enforcement is pretty layed back out there also. There is a nice 1400 sidewalk top jetty for people to go out on and take picts of skis while not get wet doing so. The place is called J.P. Lubey (That name trips me out).

I used to launch on the beach, but now I'm lazy and use the ramp. The action on the beach is non stopped on the weekend, bonfires and parties all most every night. I used to take my NICE 50cc (Chinese honda knock off, lol) out there all the time with no problems. Port Aransas is a bit more structured than Lubey is and I believe the beach is semi blocked off to surf access.

The good thing about packery channel is that you can go cruise the intracoastal waterway with family on your sit down, or hit the surf on the stand up or vice versa. all from one ramp. It has it all and for free. The surfer community stepped up and played a big part is keeping the beaches open to all. Thus keeping out the big resort that was supposed to come here. There are hotels on the island that are not that expensive even in summer (the holiday inn is though).

Oh yea, the local game warden is cool with people doing tricks and such on skis. Just obey the 50ft rule and no wake zones, as I have had a few conversations with him over the last season.
