Stalls out when on its right side.

Hi everyone. I have a 2011 Sxr 800. It runs fantastic 90% of the time. I bought it from a guy who builds race skis. When running the ski turning back and forth just driving it there is no issues. But when I start to ride it hard, it seems to want to stall when it tips over to the right. I can tip it on the left side, dive it under water no issues. As soon as I go to the right side ( carb side) it almost seems like it floods or it is ingesting water. Sometimes you can blip the throttle and it will stay running other times it will die. Anyone ever seen these issues? Thanks for you help.

SXR's do not like to be subbed!!!!!! The Intakes suck so much water into the engine bay........

I don’t actually sub the ski. Was trying to give an example of how I could carve hard to the left but when it’s the right side it wants to bog out and stall. I installed a bilge, as well as a duck bill on the back. Not much water if any is under the hood.

Maybe fuel pickup tubes are not going to the bottom of the tank

My SXR dies after a bad landing when I tilt it to the right. I just assumed it was the water in the pipe Because it will always start when I tilt it back to the left. Not if tilted right and sometimes if I don’t tilt it left it won’t start and I have to get the water out of the engine.

I-body carbs are more sensitive to fuel pressure than SBNs. They are more likely to go rich when the tank gets pressurized or when it is above the carbs. Ive had others do this to some degree .

Another 2011 SXR owner here.

You have the possibility of a few things when it leans to the right.

1. Water exhaust going back into engine. Stock exhaust or?
2. Water getting sucked into the carbs. Stock flame arresters?
3. Weak fuel pump, maybe.

Make sure you're siphon is hooked up and working WELL. If they removed it, slap your buddy and reinstall one.
Make sure the two down spouts are attached to the hood. The big rubber tubes keep water going to the bottom of the hull, away from the carbs.

To stop water intrustion, buy or make the block off plate for the front of the hood. Cut another breather in the back of the hood. I don't even need a bilge pump riding the surf anymore

I have a factory dry pipe. I am currently running aftermarket cone filters. I installed a bilge pump and there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of water getting in. I did put a frog skin on the front hole in the hood to restrict water getting in. I have recently done a OEM rebuild on the carbs. I can look into the fuel pump. Would seem odd that it wouldn’t be more consistent and not just went carving to the right. Haven’t had the ski back in the water. Seeing as the weather has taken on our fall weather here in Canada. As for the down spout. I believe there is only one. The hood had to be modified to fit the dry pipe.

I would spend some time getting your hood done right. From the sounds of it you have water ingestion.

I can take a photo of my hood if you need. I cut the liner out, except for the rear area. Added a second breather and moved second down tube to the rear. The front hole is sealed with block off plate.

A hood leak may not be your problem, but this should help rule it out: Back in the day (2003-2010) some SXR's hoods leaked water at the seal on the carb side when aggressively leaned over and turning right. People would glue a piece of turf to the inner liner of the hood that acted as a deflector/divider between the carbs and the lip of the hull where the hood seals. The turf was the length of the inner hood and deep enough to go past the base of the flame arrestor. This is a rough idea below. Red is the turf, blue is the contact cement surface. Obviously this isnt the ideal solution, but may give you an answer. I cannot say I have ever seen an OEM SXR hood seal fail to this day, but you never know.

I am thinking it is a fuel problem. Try adding a 2nd small clear check valve on the kidney shaped valve body. (Stack them).

Water in fuel. Drain everything, dry out the carbs, reassemble.

youre either ingesting water at the hood or your filler inlet may be cracked. check the fuel system.
