Surfriding stand ups in Hawaii?

I remember watching a badass video of people riding in Hawaii about a year ago... the water was super clear and a guy was diving down to retrieve a hood. Wish I could find it again.

Yes it's here in Tahiti, where , we dive down to retrived a hood :Banane01:

Just 8 hours with plane from you to ride in very clear water , and swim with hood

;-))))

Thanks Honda118 for the vid link ;-)

I couldnt find them on the North Shore, rented a house for a week in front of the Banzai Pipeline..........kinda glad I never found a ski to ride, 25 footers on the backside the day I left!

From what I know, the laws haven't changed much so the areas around Oahu where you can ride a ski legally are still far away from any surf. I got 2 tickets for riding outside the official ORMA (Ocean Recreation Management Area) while I was there, one of which was just cruising well offshore on the North Shore northeast of Haleiwa on a flat day.

Maui is supposedly a little better.

Looks like you have to be certified to operate one now also. http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dbor/bor_pwcs.htm

Notice the yellow zone on this one and how it's closed 1/2 of the year. You're supposed to travel at 5knots or less to/from the area also.

There is some good footage of riding the north shore in the classic jetski video Freeloaders, a must have. They just put in Haleiwa harbor and rode the zone to the right. Don’t think it was a “zone” then. You can also skip the certification course if you go to the attached link, watch the entire video and take a small survey at the end. Mahalo Bishezz!

It's been a 'zone' since I was there 93-95, they probably had a permit for filming.

550 limited, that's all you need with waves like those. My buddy Roland had a 550 mod and 750 mod that were both beasts, but he was more into racing than surf riding.

I am moving to Maui in a month or so that is why I am selling everything. All the people I talk to say no standup jetskis in the surf. I hear on the big island you can get away with it in some spots. If I find a spot to ride I will definitely be getting a ski out there. Problem will be someone to ride with..

Nice. I figure I will slowly get into the tow in game. thinking about doing the K38 training so I can help out on the big days.

I've never seen a stand up in Maui and probably for good reason. I dont think the locals would take too kindly to a white boy riding a ski on their waves. Most of them don't even like it when another local boy tries to surf their waves

Hawaii stinks...sorry. Good luck. I have been through Hawaii about 20 times on my way out and back from Micronesia (where I lived most of my 20's) and everytime I spent more than a few hours there I had just an awful time. I tried surfing some of the breaks but you get yelled at and threatened for no good reason other than your white and you are not from there. This was back in the mid 90's when things were more tame. I could not imagine going there now.
Oh it's the only place where I have been approached to buy drugs on an airline hopping between Honolulu and the big Island.

I was lucky since I was military and was able to ride at Hickam AFB. We were never ever bothered at that surf break, ever, and only had a few other military guys out there surfing a few times. Waves that slowly build then break over the course of 300-400' is really nice.

Right here: https://www.google.com/maps?ll=21.304838,-157.950708&spn=0.003324,0.006142&t=h&z=18
The right side by the runway was perfectly calm behind the breakwater and 10-15' deep so it was great for tossing out buoys while waves broke on both sides of channel past the breakwater.
