I hear ya I have heard many different perspectives on Hawaii your not the first person to say that but I am going to give it a go. I want to see for myself I am that kind of fool.
Ain’t that the truth. I’ve been in and out of there a lot since the late 80’s mostly for work, and my memories are predominantly of getting yelled at and/or threatened. Pretty much a buzz killer, not to mention falling on coral reefs, ‘nother buzz kill. With the new technologies in wetsuits the Pacific North West is the Jetski surf paradise for my 2 cents. Lots of good jobs between Seattle and Portland and tons of amazing surf, and amazing people, just gotta get the right gear. Heck here’s a funny story. Last year I was out at Pacific City after a nice Tierra session with some friendly folks from Idaho. I’m watching this old dude just shredding it on a standup paddle board. He never fell off and always made it through the gnarliest white water, which is super tricky if you have ever done the “trial by opai-kai”. When he came out of the water it was Gerry Lopez! Mr pipline. He moved to Oregon and said he loved it out here pretty much for the above reasons. We held hands and watched the sun go down behind Haystack rock. Then he sniffed his fingers and said is that 927?
That all being said it’s possible you could make a spot for yourself in Maui as a motor head/ driver as most surfers aren’t generally interested with mechanicals and also how to drive pwc. Maui is a tough nut to crack, the place is crawling with world class waterman that are masters in all the disciplines, wind-surf, kite-board, tow, paddle, SUP. All in raging surf. On top of that there are plenty of guys that have big bucks, either it was given to them or they earned it themselves, who will provide the PWC and drive just to get a chance to be out there when it’s going off. And this is people coming from all over the world not just the US. Any ways if you gotta go , ya gotta go. Good luck.
