Surfriding stand ups in Hawaii?

I hear ya I have heard many different perspectives on Hawaii your not the first person to say that but I am going to give it a go. I want to see for myself I am that kind of fool.

Ain’t that the truth. I’ve been in and out of there a lot since the late 80’s mostly for work, and my memories are predominantly of getting yelled at and/or threatened. Pretty much a buzz killer, not to mention falling on coral reefs, ‘nother buzz kill. With the new technologies in wetsuits the Pacific North West is the Jetski surf paradise for my 2 cents. Lots of good jobs between Seattle and Portland and tons of amazing surf, and amazing people, just gotta get the right gear. Heck here’s a funny story. Last year I was out at Pacific City after a nice Tierra session with some friendly folks from Idaho. I’m watching this old dude just shredding it on a standup paddle board. He never fell off and always made it through the gnarliest white water, which is super tricky if you have ever done the “trial by opai-kai”. When he came out of the water it was Gerry Lopez! Mr pipline. He moved to Oregon and said he loved it out here pretty much for the above reasons. We held hands and watched the sun go down behind Haystack rock. Then he sniffed his fingers and said is that 927?
That all being said it’s possible you could make a spot for yourself in Maui as a motor head/ driver as most surfers aren’t generally interested with mechanicals and also how to drive pwc. Maui is a tough nut to crack, the place is crawling with world class waterman that are masters in all the disciplines, wind-surf, kite-board, tow, paddle, SUP. All in raging surf. On top of that there are plenty of guys that have big bucks, either it was given to them or they earned it themselves, who will provide the PWC and drive just to get a chance to be out there when it’s going off. And this is people coming from all over the world not just the US. Any ways if you gotta go , ya gotta go. Good luck.

Hawaii is awesome. I've been a handful of times. my grandparents lived on maui since i can remember until a few years ago they moved back to Michigan. i would move there if i could afford it. everything is pricey there. never seen jetskis though so idk.

The craziest thing is back in the 90's I was really into windsurfing and I dragged my windsurf gear around from Micronesia to the mainland a few times. At every airport from Orlando to Saipan EXCEPT in Hawaii I was offered excellent help carrying/moving the equipment. In Hawaii the airport people yelled at me for having my windsurf equipment with me.
Good luck I"m sure you will have a good time. Just stay chilled and it should be good.

Every time I see surf shots from the west coast I am definitely crazy jealous I have thought about it a lot and got a job offer from a company in Oregon but I need a break from winters. I know that it is not as cold as some might think but I want to live in board shorts for a little bit. Eating reef is never fun, I am big into fishing and diving really anything in the water. Assuming that I can get along with the locals the only bad part is no jetski, you guys on here are the only people that can really understand how bad that sux. I really appreciate all the opinions even though I have have jacked this thread but I think we answered the question hawaii standup jet ski no bueno.

Im sure a stand up would be a blast but the surfers suck, the reef suck, and the sharks suck.

I did question how bad it would suck getting pounded going over the falls and having the ski land on you. I have had this happen on sandy bottoms and that was not fun. Since I like to ride/surf the wave more then go big off the backside I am sure it is only a matter of time before we meet and I end up a bloody mess. The videos from the guys in Tahiti reminded me how shallow it really is. But sharks not sure they suck.

I only saw 1 actual shark in the water in my 2-3 years of riding there, not an issue. The one I did see was fairly good size, maybe in the 6-8' range but it's hard to tell from above water.
