standing on sides; is this common?

I do that to screw around when I am bored. I don't think the balance is any better.
 
I only do that when my back starts to cramp up...for some reason standing up on the rail allows me to stretch it out and it stops bothering me. Handling is considerably worse though...

I never stand on the sides but to toot around. It makes the turning harder and everything becomes based on your balance.

IMO, get a longer rideplate.

I do it quite a bit but just to mix it up. I would say turning becomes much more difficult fo sure.

I aslo stick my leg out back and lean forward like a figure skater all while blowing my whistle to get attention.

I do it to stretch my back out as well. It "feels" like you can turn a bit better simply because when you make a turn your weight is farther out to the edge of the ski.
