My first very own one (not my dad's who was a fanatic, LOL) was Minsk 117 (175cc 2-stroke)... 30 years ago.
One of the last ones was IZH Planeta Sport (350cc 2-stroke)... 20 years ago.

Today I would go for a Honda 4-stroke dual sport anywhere in the 450-650cc range, late model.

I don't disagree with an XR of any displacement. I've had a XR 100, 200, and 350. I couldn't kill any of them. I mistreated them all as a teen and early adult who had no money for upkeep. I just put gas and oil in them and they ran forever.

kdx 200/220 is the cheapest to own period. got a nice one about 3 years ago for 600

klx300 is a good all around bike. i'm 250lbs and i've jumped my old one on an 80 foot double a few times. cv actuated throttle usually means way better hook up also. purchased a mint one for 1300 for a 2001 about a year ago.

xr400 is another great bike, easy to ride. just change oil basially. paid 1100 for a 2000 about a year go.

the new wr's, yzf's, crf's require about 10 times the work to keep in proper order as the bikes i said above. if anyone tells you otherwise they just don't do what should be done.
