Arght......so my starter went south.

I plan on going to a couple of dealerships around here tomorrow to find one. I am pretty sure no one will stock a Superjet starter.
SO.....which model skis, even brands, use the same starter?

I just saw that Jetskisolutions stocks a bearing rebuild kit.....which is what I need. The needle bearing in the front got messed up and locked the whole starter.

26 bucks ain't so bad.

experiance has shown me, that once a starter is dis-assmbled, it's days are numbered. the factory seals can never be duplicated. once the rebuilt starter gets wet, it will fail in short order. I have done the rebuilds both myself & thru starter rebuild centers. same results.

As for aftermarket starters, MES is the best & Arco is the worst.
Bite the bullett & get an OEM, it will save you lots of headakes

you can get the oem seals and brushes for a fraction of the cost from a honda atv shop and if you paint the starter after rebuild it will seal it up nicely!
i have had great luck building starters this way... out of junk
arco and goki run tight race for worst!

Not sure why I posted a bunch double, but lets try this again!!!

In an effoert not to put you down, but, when you do this service for a paying customer. Then it fails in a month or two, thats not cost effictive.
I don't dought you can make it work for yourself. The long term goal is my point here.

Yeah do not get arco whatever you do. My first arco went to crap after about 2 months of use. I sent it back and got a replacement, now after only about 4 rides, its already hesitating.

Im gonna rebuild my starter next week, the brushes failed. John at JSS is hooking me up with:

New OEM brushplate
New OEM needle-bearing which comes with the dust seal
ALL new gaskets for the starter, including the o-ring on the front

The commutater and spindle and gear are all in great shape, so Im just surface cleaning the commutater, putting in the new brushes, bearings, and gonna coat the new gaskets (old one were dry rotted) with form-a gasket just as added security, then paint it all up.

I would worry about the dust seal for the needle-bearing, and John has the OEM ones, which come with the starter bearing rebuild kit.

All in all, to rebuild my brush plate and bearings and gaskets, I think its a little less then 100 bucks, and all the parts are OEM.

BTW, Matt, if you do decide to put in another needle bearing and dust seal, the bearing and dust seal are pretty hard to get out. I had to find a socket that would fit through the front cover hole, but catch the edge of the bearing, and then heat up the cover with a torch, and then tap the bearing out with a mallet, they really are pressed in there. I think I'm gonna have to drill out the brass bushing bearing in the rear cover, that ones pressed in pretty tight as well.

you can actually use the base from any 650-750 kawi. The top part comes off the assembly, bolt your top to the kawi base, and boom, instant sj starter, with 2 orings to boot.

Starters

I agree with Magoo & Wax..

I have never rebuilt and/or purchased an aftermarket starter that was worthwile.. Most customers were back within 60 days with a defective starter or complaining that their charging circuit was defective. When the starters fail, they often draw a ton of amps because the bushings/bearings prematurely wear out and cause a ton of internal drag and friction.

When you can't get your ski started in the middle of the lake and you have to swim it back, an OEM starter will seem like a bargain..

Creative RE Purchasing
I don't have much experience with Yami starters, but when it comes to Kawi I only purchase OEM starters. I have gone through rebuilds and aftermarket junk and they turned about to be just that... JUNK. Go with an OEM that you wont have to mess with for another couple years

Okay...I slapped an OEM starter on my engine, courtesy of my spare, err, my wife's SJ.
I have a used OEM starter coming my way, as well as a rebuild kit for the broken starter.
It was only 25 bucks (still have to get O-Rings, though), and I'll keep that one as an emergency spare.
