Starter just spins sometimes.

Hi All,

New superjet owner here. I just bought a 91 square nose. It's a new experience so far, but definitely more challenging than my couches (and funner).

Quick question. About 4 out of 5 times, I go to start it and it starts up just fine. The other 1 out of 5, I just hear the starter spinning. Not sure whether it's the bendix not popping out or the starter just spinning internally. Has anybody experienced this? It looks like I can remove the starter by removing the gas tank and not the whole engine, is that correct?

Also, can I remove the flywheel cover without having to take the whole engine out? Obviously, to replace the bendix, I have to take the engine out and remove the flywheel.

Thanks for the help. This is an awesome site!! I hope to contribute at some point once I figure out how these things work.

Welcome to the X

You can take out the starter, flywheel and bendix with the motor mounted.

Just pull the tank and flywheel cover, you will need a puller to get the flywheel off, you bendix is behind the flywheel.

The starter is easy, just 2 bolts at the back of the starter. You might have to tap the starter backwards with a piece of wood.

Thanks Jetfiend! Great info! I'm trying to decide whether to fix it now or wait until it doesn't work at all. I may wait until after the riding season. Picked it up for $900. I probably payed too much, but around here, you can't find a running Super Jet for less than that. I really appreciate the help.

You might not want to be a mile from shore when it 'just doesn't work anymore'.

Haha, agreed! I stay pretty close to shore for now. I've got a couple of couches I can have somebody follow me on if I ever want to venture further out. The scenery doesn't change much though no matter where I go on my main lake. I'm just working on staying upright right now.

I'm loving the ski, but man, these things are tougher than they look. I love the learning process though. The biggest thing I've learned is that these things will slide a long ways if you fall off at a high speed... And if you do fall off, make sure you pull the lanyard out. My wrist slipped out once without yanking the lanyard. Luckily they go in a bit of a circle, but it took all I had to catch it.
