starter relay getting stuck open

What can cause a starter relay to get stuck 'open' sometimes and not others??
Switch & relay are wired correctly. Some times it opens and closes normally, and a couple of times it gets stuck open and starter won't stop spinning.
I have another relay to put in tonight, but just wonding what could cause it to do this...

Are you sure it's the relay and not your switch?

If you're sure it's not the start switch sticking then you need a solenoid. Also, it's stuck closed, not open.:smile:

I was not thinking right, when it's closed it passes the juice, not open. Thnx crammit.
I'm using a 550 switch w/o a lanyard. I took the switch apart and then jumped the relay posts a couple of times and it still stuck. Also jumped the posts in the start switch and relay stuck closed again.

I have never seen one stick closed like this, just start to click when they were going out... glad I have another to try to see if that's the problem. Both look new.

Bad battery or cables also will causes this as the amperage can be too low and make it weld/stick the contacts. Try a new relay first.

Mine did that last summer, lucky I was right on the bank, but it sucked up rocks and stuff while I was reaching for tools, I finally grabbed a grapefruit sized rock and knocked the SHIAT out of my elec box, its been working fine ever since.

a low battery can make the yami relays stick closed. also, if theres a bunch of crap/sediment/etc, it can stick.
