650/X-2 Starting/Electrical issue on an '89 650sx

Just pulled my '89 650sx out to re-install the battery after a long winter and when I hooked it up nothing happened. Never had any issues before and always keep the battery stored inside all winter on a battery tender. Battery voltage shows 12.5 volts. I cleaned both terminals on the battery and on the starter motor. Elec. Box connections look bright and clean and have dielectric grease on them. Checked all connections and still, when I hit the start button nothing, not even a weak crank, or click, just nothing.

My guesses are either the switch at the handlepole or something inside the elec box...? Could it be the starter? How would i verify?

Anybody else have any experience with this or any ideas?

You can use a screwdriver to briefly and carefully jump across the relay terminals on the elec. box; the starter should hit if the battery is good.

Next, unscrew the cap over the stuffing grommet where the start button leads enter the elec. box. Disconnect the start button leads and jump the leads on the e. box together. If the relay engages and your starter hits your problem is with the button, if it does not engage the problem is with the relay in the e. box.

Good luck,

Bob
