I know it may be a fairly rare setup, but this is what my buddy Whitca has going: Q8 with XMW adjustable Kawi pole, Blowsion short steering plate with Phat Clamps. Yamaha 144 mag pump modified for Kawi steering.
The 750SX steering cable he has on there is too long at the turn plate. It runs out of threads far before the steering piece is centered on the knuckle.
Does anyone have experience with this setup? What did you use?

I think Yamaha pump may be a problem. It's may be different lengh from steering nozzle pivot point to cable locking nut in pump cavity for Kawi and Yami

I have a fixed XMW pole and I know I could not use the mount that XMW provides for the Kawi cable setup. I had to build my own custom bracket that held the cable farther forward on the pole by probably an inch or better.

Moving the mounting point forward...as in down the pole/toward the pivot won't work?

Here is the bracket Blowsion has to fit a UMI on a Kawi: http://www.blowsion.com/products/338-steering-cable-extension-umi-conversion.aspx

The mounting point is at the very front of the adjustable piece, so you can't move it forward further

I think I about have it worked out. The cable came with the hull when I bought it and I was told it was a 650sx cable. The little funky cable sleeve XMW supplies with the pole that slides over the sleeve of the cable has a small tapped hole in it which I figure is to fine tune cable length with a set screw which wasn't supplied. I picked one up today and it's getting a lot closer now. I originally had an extension on the pump end of the cable but removed it when I had the cable mounted in the intended location where the clip holds the cable. With the set screw piece I can adjust the cable wherever I want. I set it up quickly tonight and am too short now, running out of throw before the turn plate hits the stop on one direction. A little more fine tuning and it should work. I can get pics up once it's done so this all makes sense.

The issue lies with the pole. It's machined for the cable holder at the very end of the adjustable slide on the XMW adjustable. It's machined on both sides for either Kawi or yami....in the same location (which I find odd since cable lengths are different). It could very well be that I'm running a Blowsion plate with Umi bearing system rather than the XMW steering system that's causing some issues. I've already had to do some grinding on the steering stop/pad post so the turnplate would even fit. I'm not bashing anyone as far as quality goes, it's just one of those things that comes with a custom ski build that has to be worked out and my choice in components to run and their compatibility is working against me. I really am impressed with the quality on the XMW pole, and it's not realistic to expect them to test every turnplate steering combo available. I did order the slide made for the umi set up. I should have it done and working by tonight.

I am running sxr cable w/rrp pole, blowsion plate, and my buddy clouse has the xmetal pole with sxr cable. I think those cables measure differently on bar and pump ends.

I thought of that but then then you lessen the amount of throw which it needs just about all of in my case. I ended up putting a set screw in the xmw adapter piece that holds the cable. The screw pinches the cable housing between the notch for the oem retaining clip and the end of the cable. That worked for a ride then started slipping so I added a shaft collar on one side to prevent slipping. So far it's worked fine. It's not the optimal setup but at this point I want to ride and will figure out something better this winter.
