ive removed mine with just the ride plate out. i thougth it was easier than removing the pump actually! fighting with that threaded cap was interesting tho....
The time you spend removing and installing your pump, is the same amount of time you'll spend trying to get the retainer nut off of the steering cable. Besides, when you pull your pump, you'll be able to get a good look at your impeller, and file down any rough spots on the leading edges of the blades!:biggrin:
