I got a new handpole thats suppose to be -4 inches and I just pulled my old one off to compare. My old one measures 38 1/2 from pivot to pivot the new is 37 1/2. how do these measurements compare to a stock pole length?

This seems to be a common discrepancy, both the method of measuring the pole and they way each manufacturer builds them.

My so-called -2" xmetal poles both measure 37.5" pivot to pivot

Sounds like there may be hope for me yet... My AC pole on my SJ measures 38" from pivot to pivot.

I'll propose a new measuring method and see what people think. Lower the pole all the way down until it can't go much further. Then measure pivot to the inside hull line. My SJ pole measures about 4.4" and 38" pivot to pivot in a straight line.

I don't see the merit in your new method. It leaves too many factors to account for, like pole mount position, or type of ski ( FX1,RN,SN,custom ), and height of pole mount.

A simple pivot bolt to steering stem measurement is more precise, as long as everyone measures from the center of the pivot bolt, instead of from the side on a slight angle.

My thoughts were to get a base line from old pole to new pole on the same ski. In situations like Chrisdoc said... His old pole measured 38.5" and his new -4" pole measured 37.5". Then you've got someone else saying a stock pole measures 38.5".

I can't help but notice that there is an issue with either measurement practices or manufacturers building specs...or both. I'm not saying my way is the best but I know I'd be beyond pissed off if I spent $400-$500 on a new pole to give me -4" when it actually gave me -1".
